About this listen

They call them the custard tarts - the girls who work at Pearce Duff's custard powder factory in Bermondsey before the First World War. Conditions are hard but nothing can quench the spirit of humour and friendship. But the shadow of the coming war looms over them; it will pull London's East End together as never before - even while it tears the world apart.

A tale of life's growth experiences.

A truly absorbing story. The characters were so very real. The climax of the story was quite tumultuous. I wept.

Jonees read

A great read about life in England starting in the year 1910. The struggles of the time to keep families together and put bread on the table.
It was easy to get hooked on the characters as you followed their hardship. A great reminder of how easy life is today.

Pre-war Chick lit

I discovered this book as it was on offer through Amazon and noticed it had a Whispersync option and thought I would give it a go. I found it to be a fantastic story & loved the fact was set in pre-war London. I ended up buying Jam and Roses too, set in the 1920's, as I enjoyed the authors way of storytelling and Anne Dover's reading style, will be looking out for more books from both.

nice story that flows.

I enjoyed this book. the narrator is one of my favs.
There are depressing moments, but happy times also and really gives you a sense of the mindset of those that went through the war...and those left at home, where women were subpar.
