كاتب الرواية إسلام عبدالله هو أحد أبطالها. إذ يسافر لقضاء عدة أيام في بلدة صغيرة داخل القاهرة مع أحد قراءه، الذي تعرف عليه عبر الفيسبوك، بعدما أخبره الأخير عن قريبه المهتم بالسحر والشعوذة، ولمعرفته بأن إسلام يهتم بقصص الرعب. ليكتشف الكاتب بعد قبوله الدعوة أنه من الخطأ أن نستهين بذكاء أحدهم مهما كان سنه، وأن نأخذ حذرنا في كل تصرف وفعل. فيقول:

"دائماً ما كُنت أعتقد أن خيالي بلا جموح، يذهب بي إلى عوالم لم أتطرقها من قبل، أشاهد ما لم يُشاهده إنسان قبلي، أصنع من خلاله أكواناً بقصص وشخصيات أحاجي بها ربوب أولي العزم من صانعي الميثولوجيا والأساطير القديمة.. ولكن كُل أحلامي وطموحاتي تحطمت على صخرة الواقع وصلابته.. ولقد أدركت بالطريقة الصعبة أنه مهما صنع عقلي من آمال ومخاوف فلن تُضاهي أبداً صلابة الواقع وتدابير القدر.. فتلك الرحلة الملعونة التي خُضتها، أثبتت بلا شك أن الواقع بالفعل أسوأ وأكثر رُعباً بكثير من الخيال."
