About this listen
If you’d asked me a week ago, I would have told you that the best cupcakes were dark chocolate with chocolate cream cheese icing, that dancing in a crowd of magic wielders—the Adept—was better than sex, and that my life was peaceful and uneventful. Just the way I liked it.
That’s what 23 years in the magical backwater of Vancouver will get you—a completely skewed sense of reality. Because when the dead werewolves started showing up, it all unraveled—except for the cupcake part. That’s a universal truth.
Cupcakes, Trinkets, and Other Deadly Magic is the first book in the Dowser series, which is set in the same universe as the Oracle, Reconstructionist, Amplifier, Archivist, and Misfits of the Adept Universe series. While it is not necessary to listen to the whole series, in order to avoid spoilers, the ideal listening order of the Adept Universe begins with Cupcakes, Trinkets, and Other Deadly Magic.

I like the writing, but not the heroine
Jade is a very sweet girl, if not overly bright (to which she admits). She is also a complete pushover and accepts blame and punishments that she does not deserve, yet never assigns any to the people or circumstances around her, who manipulate her like a puppet. It is very hard to respect a pretty doll with no backbone. Her male interests are not endearing in any way yet, but it is still early in the series and they have not really had a chance to show a personality (beside overbearing and obnoxious). In other words, I don’t like a single character so far.
The writing is good, although the world building is very basic: hidden supernaturals - enough said. The mystery is so blatant from the start, that I was sure I had to be wrong and was hoping for a twist (nope).
Wow… that sounded quite negative. In summary: it is an OK start to a series. I am sufficiently entertained to try the sequel, but if Jade doesn’t start to stand up for herself in the next book, I won’t continue. Since this series has such good reviews, I assume it gets better.
The narrator was the best thing about this book and I will look for more works featuring her.
