A profound tour de force on the human condition

A gripping exploration of the human condition and its paradoxes; anguish, hope, vanity, devotion, self sacrifice, the will to power, thwarted ambition, self-destruction, alienation; redemption and the transfigurative power of love.

This novel draws heavily on the author’s own experiences. Dostoevsky was a genius gifted with perhaps deeper insight into the human psyche than any other novelist. His limitless capacity to love and to suffer are borne out in his narrative. Set in the capital of imperial Russia, St Petersburg during the late Czarist, early revolutionary period, amongst a civilisation propped up by an ossified and crumbling order, in a state of flux and foment. This novel was a wellspring of inspiration for Nietzsche and existentialism.

The narrator’s performance is dynamic and gripping, The novel is most rewarding if listened to in longer sittings over a short period of time in order to fully absorb the nuances of plot, structure and allegory.

A type of Russian dickens novel

What a tale. So very human. Although it was a book filled with poverty I love the hope it left you with. This story is a perfect example of why God needed to send His son ,Jesus. For who can stone for our sins but our creator.

a psychological thriller

the reading is a bit monotonous with interjected excitement, a little like the story. a ride into the spiralling personal hell of a murderer.

My favourite book

Amazing story, Dostoevsky is a genius and although the main message of this book may be disputed, this will forever be a work of literary art and a beautiful insight into some psychological concepts.

Classic

Loved this book. Found the pacing slow in some points. The narrator had similar voices for some or the characters that threw me off a couple of times. Great listen however, glad I finished it.
