About this listen
Rand McIntyre settles for good enough. He loves his small California ranch, raising horses, and teaching riding to the kids he adores - but having kids of his own and someone to love means coming out, and that would jeopardize everything he's built. Then, despite his terror of flying, he goes on a holiday to Hana, Hawaii, with his parents and meets the dark and mysterious Kai Kealoha, a genuine Hawaiian cowboy. Rand takes to Kai's kid brother and sister as much as he drools over Kai, but the guy sports more prickles than a horned toad and more secrets than the exotic land he comes from.
Kai's earned his privacy and lives to protect his "kids". He ought to stay away from the big, handsome cowboy for everyone's sake - but since the guy's just a haole on a short vacation, how much damage can he do? When all of Kai's worst fears and Rand's darkest nightmares come true at once, there's not much chance for two cowboys who can't - or won't - come out.

Great cowboy story
Really enjoyed this one. I was not sure where it was going and was pleasantly surprised as the story developed and the characters grew in complexity. The slow drip feed of their back-stories (Rand's fear of heights, and Kai's big brother role) was enjoyable and did not feel forced. We found out more just when we needed. Some great side characters also added to the richness of this story. The Hawaii setting was great too with loads of (well pronounced) Polynesian words and phrases used throughout.
K.C. Kelly again delivered a fantastic vocal narrative for the audiobook. I am familiar with his voice from other books by Tara Lain, and it is obvious why she keeps working with him.
Really enjoyed this and I hope you will too.

A sweet feel-good Hawaiian romance!
When Californian riding school owner Rand McIntyre spends the Christmas break in Hawaii with his parents, he never expects to expects to fall for local Hawaiian cowboy (paniolo) Kai Kealoha and his young brother and sister, Aliki and Lani. I’m not usually a fan of instalove, but there were so many things I enjoyed about this feel-good story, I didn’t mind. One of the things I always love about cowboy characters is that they say little but think a lot - I like the quiet in them - and that’s the case for both Rand and Kai. While Kai remains fairly mysterious for most of the book, we get to spend a lot of time in Randy’s head: he’s a thoroughly decent, kind, if conflicted character. The secondary characters are all lovely, I really liked Rand’s interfering but well-intentioned mother and quiet father, but Aliki and Lani steal the show - they are particularly gorgeous kids, and I felt like Rand was equally drawn to them. I also loved the Hawaiian setting. KC Kelly narrates the audio incredibly well, his cowboy and Hawaiian accents are a dream. I’ll enjoy listening to this one again!
