About this listen

The author and his immediate family live in Eagle County, Colorado. It is better known to the world as the Vail Valley. Vail's reputation for its natural beauty and outdoor activities all year long is well deserved. It brings people from all over the world to visit or live. As with any town or city, there are some not-so-nice people. There is always a dark underside, and this was what the author dealt with during his 30-year career in Vail.

During a very satisfying career as a cop, I have experienced many unique situations and, through a sense of humor, enjoyed most of them. With few exceptions, I have loved and respected the many officers I served with during those years. However, police work can be dangerous. Our department endured the worst when one of our officers died in the line of duty during a traffic-accident investigation.
