Publisher's Summary

Seth Andrews idolized Rush Limbaugh. He listened to Glenn Beck. He read Ann Coulter. He watched Fox News. He was an evangelical Christian once tethered to right-wing media, which constantly warned of an attack on American values by liberals and secular humanists. Today, Seth is a liberal and secular humanist.

This audiobook explores the Fox News culture, which both reflects and informs American conservatism, shaping public opinion on important issues like religion, government, race, foreign policy, war, protest, LGBT rights, and the Constitution. It's an exposé of conservative media's "closed systems" which constantly feed on (and feed into) public outrage, ignorance, bigotry, and fear. It's also the story of one man's personal journey into a larger and better world.

Very good.

One thing that did help me appreciate this book was the fact that Seth did make some criticisms of Left wing 'woke' ideology in the final chapter of the book. The book is well researched, easy to absorb and read brilliantly, as with all of Seths work, bit I was glad to see the final chapter for balance. What would be tremendous would be a similar, equally insightful commentary on the lefts shift into rabid insanity.

Well read

As a Christian, but not an American, I have no objection and take no offence to Seth’s point of view.
I find Seth’s narrative, he is easy to listen to and understand.
Looking forward to the next book.

One of the best books of the year.

This has been one of the best books I’ve heard all year. The author goes far beyond tripes about how bad Fox News is and doesn’t go on unintelligible tangents about media bias. He instead offers a history and presentation of the symbiotic relationship Fox News and evangelical christians have in America, outlines the contradiction ripe within the relationship. He devotes quite a percentage of the book to the influences of shock jocks like rush, and other Fox News media personalities and how their rhetoric and selective language only further drives this narrowing view among the America public but especially evangelicals.
He also explains the reason he challenged his long held views about culture, God and religion and used a personal relationship with a friend as the catalyst.
The author also bravely addresses the key issues and contradictions fervently believed by the hard Christian Right, in terms of abortion, the death penalty, guns rights, the adherence and misunderstanding of the bible by the many devout with actual real examples and also without malice or subjective hubris. Instead he asked people on all sides to consider the others point of view and preaches a greater collective compassionate secularism with pragmatic rationalism and integrity very hard to argue with.
He has integrity on the subject because of his devout past and also his former profession as a Christian radio host in Oklahoma. Who was a deep devout republican believer in the Christian religion that he had a unique perspective often lost on secular atheists who’ve never considered religion as a viable option.
This is one of the most compassionate well reasoned and enjoyable reads I’ve had the pleasure to absorb.
The author devotes a chapter to the cultural online left with clarity not malice and displays a reasonable approach to discourse and urges people of the left to reconsider the way in which they interact online.
I urge all people religious or not to listen or read this book as it provides a beautiful and careful perspective on such an emotional issue. People of the christian faith should really listen to this, not in the way to convert them to secularism as that may be a stretch but in the instance of challenging their often not fully thought out strong views on emotional subjects such as faith but to also just grow and develop further compassion and love for one another in an extremely divisive age.

An Island of Sanity in a Sea of American Craziness

I’ve been a listener of Seth for many years now, and I am so thankful that I was able to listen to his most recent book! It was very well thought out, a wonderful performance (as usual, from that silky voiced baby eater) and I especially appreciated the commentary on the left’s particular brand of crazy, which as a liberal I cannot freaking stand. Overall super great book! Really recommended for anyone who is struggling to find common ground or even someone who seems to have their head screwed on straight. God love ya Seth, lol.
