درس حياة العظماء خير الدروس التي تعود على صاحبها بعميم الفوائد، وخصوصًا إذا كانت حياة العظيم مكتوبة بقلمه. وفي رأي العارفين أن أفضل ما كتبه تولستوي، الفيلسوف الروسي الذائع الشهرة، في تاريخ حياته وفلسفة الحياة عمومًا هو الفصول التي أطلق عليها اسم "اعترافي، ديانتي، إنجيلي ". وقد رأيت أن أنقلها إلى العربية رغبة في اطلاع أبناء قومي على ما فيها من الحقائق الجميلة والدروس النافعة مبتدئًا بالكتاب الأول الذي سميته "اعتراف تولستوي " راجيًا أن يقرأه الأدباء بما يستحقه من العناية.

كتبَ تولستوي اعترافه هذا سنة 1879 فلم تسمح السلطة بطبعه في روسيا ولذلك طبع في جنيف سويسرا، ومثله الكتاب الثاني والكتاب الثالث. وقد تُرجمت هذه الكتب إلى جميع اللغات الحية، ونحن بعد أن ترجمنا الجزء الأول منها وهو "اعتراف تولستوي" هذا نشتغل اليوم بترجمة الجزأين الآخرين وهما "ديانة تولستوي" أو "إنجيل تولستوي"
