Publisher's Summary
Bold, brave and darkly funny, Come is the extraordinary story of Melbourne sex worker Rita Therese and the love, sex and death she has experienced in her life so far.
Two selves intertwine and it leaves you, in the dance room, making a decision that winged liner is just for work. Because you don't know which self you are looking at right now, which person you are. The song stops and you break out of your trance and ask if he'd like to extend....
Rita is an escort, one of the best in Australia. It all began on a whim at 18, after she rang the number on a sign looking for nude models. Always the outsider, she quickly learns the sex industry is comprised of many other people just like her and she becomes immersed in this world: the drugs, the late nights, the glamour, being an outcast, the attention and validation from men. Mostly she thrives on how taboo her life has become. Following significant personal tragedy and trauma, the line between Rita's sex worker persona Gia and her real self begins to blur in a seemingly endless loop of grief, work, sex, love and heartbreak.
In this achingly honest memoir, Rita learns that death and trauma do not always bring grand transformative experiences. Sometimes, in order to go forward, we have to write our own stories and choose to keep living. With its unflinching, compelling and darkly funny narrative, Come announces a fearless new talent in Australian writing.
Critic Reviews
"A riveting and unforgettable journey. Rita’s ability to take you from despair to laughter to depravity in seconds makes this book utterly addictive. Her words will stay with you like the memory of your first lust and first loss." (Nakkiah Liu)

Surprising and very interesting book!
This was an authentic and genuine memoir of Rita. It was sad to hear a lot of personal negative experiences she had to go through. The only downside Is that the book is a bit short. I listened to it very quickly.

Importance of self-care and self-compassion
Loved the narration, and the story was great. Towards the end it was jumping all over the shop but I assumed it to be similar to the PTSD brain so I just went with it rather than being frustrated with the timeline that I know the author would have had personal struggles with. Overall, I would highly recommend this read to learn about the life of a sex worker as well as the need for self-care and self-compassion in these types of roles.

one person's story
I loved this book, I too have a history of escorting. I could relate to much of this book. I cried multiple times recounting my own emotions of how I felt during that time unable to balance the two identities. The only thing I did not love was that this is not an accurate representation of my experience in the industry. I don't feel that this accurately represents what the industry is like for most. I would urge readers to recognise that this is just one person's story. Her story, and an incredibly vulnerable and honest one at that. great book

Bloody Stunning
Such a beautiful, funny, cheeky, heart warming and sometimes breaking story. I laughed, cried, snorted and now am scrambling the internet for a hard copy.

Gut-wrenching at-the-coal-face tell all.
Not for the squeamish, Rita Therese's story will satisfy those of us who wonder what it's really like working the streets, lap dancing, stripping, and soliciting for business in brothels.
It's warts and all, superbly read, in my opinion, by Tamala Shelton. It's a monotonic reading of story after story about physical, emotional and sexual abuse, paid-for sex in utmost detail, the lowlifes who mistreat and show zero respect for working women. They often lash out in disdain of the women, so you feel for the workers.
Therese suffers the greatest humiliations both in her work and private life when in relationship/s, and details it all, seemingly unattached, sometimes as a 3rd person - hence Shelton's monotone reading.
It's a fascinating, voyeuristic, and for me (and I consider myself open minded) at least, eye opening read. You end up wishing Therese well. I empathise hugely with her, and take her side.
This is a good read (listen), IMO well worth your time and investment.

Story telling at its best
Not for the faint hearted but an amazing book which holds nothing back. This is a life that was lived and many lessons learnt.
Exciting, sad, scary, creepy and respect for this awesome lady.

One hell of a dark read
I found the book both interesting and at time challenging. I'm glad I made it through - it's a reminder of how low some men are as humans.

Accurate, raw, engaging... welcome to our world
Rita, thank you for your accurate, gripping, raw and incredibly well articulated account of the world many of us walk amongst. It is a spectrum of a world and it is completely and fully covered by your account. I applaud you for the incredible detail and depth you go into it. Without sugar coating, glorifying, skimming over or distorting your account. What a wild ride... Myself and so many other fellow (of varying degrees) workers of the industry (I was even guessed to have been one of them! HA), are incredibly appreciative and approving of what your have created.
Anyone looking for a no-holes-barred (pun intended...unfortunately...) account of a life that has covered ALL angles of the industry, this is your book. Rita's experience has certainly been an extreme, but not unusual, experience in the adult world.
I wish you all the best with your studies, future in writing and on going work in the adult industry. T x
