About this listen
As a lieutenant who was with them from first muster in California, Owen was in a unique position to see the hastily assembled mix of some 200 regulars and raw reservists harden into a superb Marine rifle company. The action and narrative move fast as the company learns to fight under enemy fire, eat frozen rations, and keep pushing forward when its wounded and dead go down.

"Owen's firsthand account is chilling and rather wonderful." (James Brady)
"Joe Owen's account of Baker-One-Seven's courageous ordeal is blunt, authentic, and compelling - a fitting tribute to his company and to his Corps." (Col. Joseph Alexander, USMC (ret.))

One of the greatest stories of combat leadership around
An amazing story demonstrating the resilience of human will. Any one looking for examples of leadership, bravery and brotherhood would do well to listen to this account of Baker 1-7.
I have listened to this book several times and read it several more each time I am left in ore of the bravery of Joe Owen and major Choo En Lee.

Colder Than Hell: A Leadership Manual
thanks to the Jocko Podcast, I have found this particular book, and have enjoyed each and every dive into it.
Owen's has given a profound look behind the curtain with this piece, showing that great Leaders can experience fear and confusion, and surpass it to act in the best interests of his Team.
While the lessons that Owen's imparts with this book are brilliant in their own right, the heartfelt stories of his troops and how they acted and protected each other being a level of familiarity and humanizes each Soldier in ways that allows listeners to relate on some level to every one involved.
while the audio quality itself isn't the best, the narrator gives a level of brilliance to even the most mundane sections of the chapters, while giving just enough space to keep you wanting the next piece.
This is well worth spending money on, and will continue to listen to it going forward to laugh at the hijynx of Bifolk and Petelli
