Maries Schwager hatte den damals Mittellosen in seinem Haus aufgenommen und Clavigo Marie bereits die Ehe versprochen. Aber er hat die Rechnung ohne Maries Bruder, dem berühmten Dichter Beaumarchais gemacht. Denn dieser schwört Rache. Inkognito taucht er in Clavigos Wohnung auf, lobt dessen Zeitschrift und erzählt nebenbei die Geschichte einer unglücklichen Frau, die von ihrem Verlobten verlassen wurde. Langsam bekommt Clavigo Angst.
