About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

One of the greatest American novels ever written.

Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird.

A lawyer's advice to his children as he defends the real mockingbird of Harper Lee's classic novel - a black man falsely charged with the rape of a white girl. Through the young eyes of Scout and Jem Finch, Harper Lee explores with exuberant humour the irrationality of adult attitudes to race and class in the Deep South of the 1930s. The conscience of a town steeped in prejudice, violence and hypocrisy is pricked by the stamina of one man's struggle for justice. But the weight of history will only tolerate so much.

To Kill a Mockingbird is a coming-of-age story, an anti-racist novel, a historical drama of the Great Depression and a sublime example of the Southern writing tradition.

Follow that!!

Imagine Harper Lee in 1960. 34 years old, she gets her first book published which immediately becomes a best-seller. A year later she gets the Pulitzer Prize for it, it’s become required reading in all the schools and is now being made into a film which wins three Oscars. No wonder she didn’t write much else after that. You just cannot follow anything that good. With Sissy Spacek's helpful reading I really, really enjoyed it. It'll be at least a day or two before I start on something else.

Outstanding Listening

Sissy Spacek is the perfect voice for a perfect story - a small town with big issues is carefully observed through the unpolluted eyes of a precocious eight year old. Surely one of the best books ever written.
