I august 1973 røvede bankrøveren Jan-Erik Olsson en bank i Stockholm og tog fire bankansatte som gidsler. Han forlangte at få forbryderen Clark Olofsson løsladt fra fængslet og bragt til banken. Det endte med, at Olofsson blev derinde i seks døgn. Gidseltagningen endte godt, men det spektakulære ved den sag var, at gidslerne fik sympati for forbryderne. Sagen gav navn til det berømte fænomen stockholmsyndromet, hvor gidsler kan få sympati for deres gidseltager.
