About this listen

'Jesus Christ. I found one.' These words are blurted over the phone to Constable Snowy Lane, who is preoccupied with no more than a ham sandwich and getting a game with the East Fremantle league side on Saturday. They signal the beginning of a series of events that are to shake Perth to its foundations.

It is 1979, and Perth is jumping with pub bands and overnight millionaires. 'Mr Gruesome' has just taken another victim. Snowy's life and career are to be forever changed by the grim deeds of a serial killer and the dark bloom spreading across the City of Light.

Intelligent and frustratingly perfect

The story was extremely well constructed, and it was very frustrating at times simply being frustrating at times simply because the work of detective act activities is frustrating. The story
really highlighted that exceedingly well,

Insight into Perth just before I was born

Warner has managed to adapt key aspects of Perth's political and cultural history into a fictional narrative. I was born in 85, whilst our big country town tries to pretend it's rid itself of the stains that a patriarchal society has left us (to the point of obnoxious denial as opposed to ignorance), this book gives insight into the way we were before we started pretending we weren't.
Previous reviews mentioned the chauvinism as though maybe it was veing glorified, I felt l
more as though it was intentionally ever present to stay true to Perth's cultural mentality at the time. I may not have been present at the time but my parents were and would agree that the stain is still in the undertow. All in all, good crime novel

Really good

The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars for the story was that it is a bit "blokey". I enjoyed it but the whole thing was written purely from a male perspective and the sex scenes were painfully male. Having said that don't let this review put you off, if you are looking for a long story to get your teeth into this is it. ( I am always looking for 20+ hours and this definitely qualified), you do need to concentrate as there are a lot of characters and keeping them separated in your mind is a bit of a challenge 😉. This would make a great movie 🎬 with a bit of help from a female co-writer. Narrator did an excellent job.

Not sure about this one, undecided

Yeah really not sure I enjoyed this story.
Too many names bouncing around to keep engaged. I didn’t mind the main character snowy, he was likeable enough. I completed the book but not with much enthusiasm. I think I might still give another Dave Warner book one more try.

Not his Best

Written as a Novel but not as far fetched as it seems, Police and Political corruption was rampant in Australia in the 1980’s we even had a Police Commissioner stripped of his Knighthood and jailed for corruption. I would have preferred more substance to the the story and less over the top gratuitous sex and violence which detracts from the narrative rather than enhancing it. Definitely one for the boys, the whole thing is dripping with testosterone.

Complex Perth Noir

Yes it is long and complex and you do have to pay attention to follow the persona and discoveries. It's worth the effort though

Freo local

Loved this book, especially the references to Perth, Fremantle and the Australian-isms. Written by a Freo legend.

The main character was a misogynist and had every women in the book swooning which I couldn’t help but wonder if Dave Warner was living vicariously through him! Although maybe I should expect nothing less from Warner. Loved the book despite objectifying women, would recommend to anyone who loves Freo and crime novels.

Excellent Narration

The story was great but the narration was perfect Together a top combination Dave Warner has made a Perthy's dream here Settings are true to form and characters known from local history But Ric Herbert's accent and tones makes it a living story I can't imagine anyone else reading a Dave Warner story

Loved it.

Being from Perth, I loved the suburbs & descriptions of areas so well known to me. I also tried to link a few of the characters to real Perth people from the 80s. The storyline was captivating & the twists had me enthralled. Really good listen & looking forward to the next ones!
