About this listen

France, 1673. Desperate to save herself and her only surviving son from an outbreak of plague, the widow Charlotte Picot flees her village. But her son is kidnapped by slavers, and she fears the boy has been taken to Paris, the terrible City of Crows. And so she resorts to witchcraft and summons assistance in the shape of a malevolent man.

Meanwhile, a notorious criminal, Lesage, is unexpectedly released from the prison galleys where he has served a brutal sentence for sacrilege....

I agree with the many positive online reviews

Well researched details are woven seamlessly into this narrative of traditional magic in a time of plague, slavery, religion and treasure-hunting.
The characters are vibrant and based on real people. I would have liked LeSage to have been more canny, using this canniness for good as his character changes; the author could have had some more fun with the dialogue.
Paris is brought to life well in all its smells, treachery and diverse characters.
There’s enough ambiguity to create mystery and I found myself invested in seeing how that plays out.
There’s humour too.
There are some interesting perspectives on power and perception.
There’s lots of interesting reviews online but I like this quote from the author’s website;
“Yet this is not only a story of Paris and its streets thronged with preachers, troubadours and rogues. It is also the tale of a woman who calls herself a sorceress and a demon who thinks he is a man . . .
A haunting tale of love and witchcraft — about the lengths to which a mother will go to rescue her child, and the lengths to which a damned man will go to save his soul.”
Oh - and make sure you listen to the author’s note at the end
