About this listen

A tour de force from acclaimed author Alan Gratz (Prisoner B-3087), this timely and powerful novel tells the story of three different children seeking refuge.

Josef is a Jewish boy living in 1930s Nazi Germany. With the threat of concentration camps looming, he and his family board a ship bound for the other side of the world....

Isabel is a Cuban girl in 1994. With riots and unrest plaguing her country, she and her family set out on a raft, hoping to find safety in America....

Mahmoud is a Syrian boy in 2015. With his homeland torn apart by violence and destruction, he and his family begin a long trek toward Europe....

All three kids go on harrowing journeys in search of refuge. All will face unimaginable dangers - from drownings to bombings to betrayals. But there is always the hope of tomorrow. And although Josef, Isabel, and Mahmoud are separated by continents and decades, shocking connections will tie their stories together in the end.

Alan Gratz (Prisoner B-3087, Projekt 1065) delivers an action-packed novel that tackles topics both timely and timeless: courage, survival, and the quest for home.

School Readings

I only read this book because my brother has to read it for school and his trouble with English.
However I ended up becoming invested in the story of these three families. I love how -unlike most novels I have read on these subject- it is told from a child’s perspective.

My child's English homework

This was assigned to my child as part of his English homework. So that he would listen to it as the reading was taking a while, we downloaded it. This story was performed well by the three narrators and even as an adult, I really enjoyed the contrast of the time frames in the stories but how they all intertwined. Refugees and their stories show the absolute strength of people when there is so much chaos in their lives. This has not changed, so despite the difference in the time frames the stories and the learnings are just as relevant today.

Great read, even for adults

While Alan Gratz teaches and writes for children, Refugee is one of those books everyone should read to learn about the old and new humanitarian issues around the world. The structure of the book is awesome, as it skips between the narrators every chapter, tying all their experiences together in a historical timeline. Some powerful quotes were performed wonderfully. Overall a great audio book for all ages.
