"If you wish to understand the roots of modern science fiction, you have to read the Lensman saga." (Allen Steele)
"A finalist for a special Hugo Award for All-Time Best Series, 'Lensman' is considered by many sf heads to be the greatest of the space operas and clearly a source for such successors as Star Trek and Star Wars." ( Library Journal)

just completed listening to the "Lensman" series
the first space opera series I ever read, and possibly the first one ever written. set in the far future, but written in the 1940s. a fascinating world where faster than light travel exists but "computers" are people that are good with slide rules. where space pirates get blasted without mercy, unless they're women, because men don't fight women. where any intergalactic problem can be solved with a can-do attitude and a few good space men.
i love the scale and scope of this universe.

More of the same
Although you could see that the story need to conclude, no new ideas were introduced to the plot in this book. Some new characters were introduced but played similar roles to the old.
The sibilance in the narrator's voice becomes a little wearing after a while, too.
