About this listen

The first book in an action-packed fantasy adventure series featuring witches, shape-shifters, and other creatures of fairytale and folklore, including two brothers - one human and one a goblin changeling - on a life-changing quest into the Oddmire.

Magic is fading from the Wild Wood. To renew it, goblins must perform an ancient ritual involving the rarest of their kind - a newborn changeling. But when the fateful night arrives to trade a human baby for a goblin one, something goes terribly wrong. After laying the changeling in a human infant's crib, the goblin Kull is briefly distracted from his task. By the time he turns back, the changeling has already perfectly mimicked the human child. Too perfectly: Kull cannot tell them apart. Not knowing which to bring back, he leaves both babies behind.

Tinn and Cole are raised as human twins, neither knowing what secrets may be buried deep inside one of them. Then when they are 12 years old, a mysterious message arrives, calling the brothers to be heroes and protectors of magic. The boys must leave behind their sleepy town of Endsborough and risk their lives in the Wild Wood, crossing the perilous Oddmire swamp and journeying through the Deep Dark to reach the goblin horde and discover who they truly are.

In The Oddmire 1: Changeling, the New York Times best-selling author of the Jackaby series brings to life a bold new adventure, the first in a series about monsters, magic, and mayhem.

Sweet and charming.

I will be the first to say that I am probably not this book's target demographic but I still enjoyed it wholeheartedly. The story was well thought out and I absolutely love the narrator, he perfectly portrays the humorous and emotional parts with excellent line delivery. Sometimes his tone seems a little bit out of place (my favorite early on example was when Kull was sneaking into the Burton's house and it described the scene suspenseful, then immediately said in a way too happy voice 'He was going to steal that baby') but these parts never took away from any of the more dramatic scenes and really improved my enjoyment of the series. Surprisingly, in my opinion, his best delivery was for Fable, as the out of place, humorous happiness really fits her character and lines.
Jonathan Todd Ross also did an excellent job when narrating for The Thing, his voice is so multi-talented and I applaud him greatly for that.
I feel that the reveal was handled excellently and Cole and Tinn are my precious baby boys, who I would die for. All the character's motivations make sense and the heartfelt scenes between the Burtons are definitely my favorite part (this book's use of 'always' beats Harry Potter's, fight me). This book was so good that I literally spent three months counting the day until the sequel came out.
I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a heartfelt family story with adventure and magic, it is humorous and an absolute joy to listen to.
