بطل هذه الرواية هو الفتى الحالم "وضاح" الذي يصيبه داء التأمل فيذهله عن واقعه ويغوص به عميقا في خلجات النفوس وأسرار الملكوت، يحبذ الظل ويفضل العزلة والهدوء, ويريد لسيرة حياته أن تكون ذاتية فترغمه الأيام على خلاف ذلك.

يعيش في مرحلة حرجة من تاريخ مأرب العاطر لينقش ذاته على حجارتها، ويرسم صورته على حضارتها.
