About this listen

How much does the internet know about you? A thought-provoking near-future YA thriller that could not be more timely as it explores issues of online privacy, artificial intelligence, and the power and perils of social networks.

Because her mom is always on the move, Steph hasn’t lived anyplace longer than six months. Her only constant is an online community called CatNet - a social media site where users upload cat pictures - a place she knows she is welcome. What Steph doesn’t know is that the admin of the site, CheshireCat, is a sentient A.I.

When a threat from Steph’s past catches up to her and ChesireCat’s existence is discovered by outsiders, it’s up to Steph and her friends, both online and IRL, to save her.

Catfishing on CatNet is a surprising, heartfelt near-future YA thriller by award-winning author Naomi Kritzer, whose short story “Cat Pictures Please” won the Hugo Award and Locus Award and was a finalist for the Nebula.

Entertaining and modern

A good story that gets you hooked. Quite entertaining and has interesting ideas about AI. However it did leave me wondering whether more could happen...

Love, love, love.

Great twisty plot, great characters, excellent voice. I really cared what would happen, and was delighted with the practical details.

Not what I expected, but arguably better

Useful info: You'll likely enjoy this story more if you check out Naomi Kritzer's short story "Cat Pictures Please" first. You can find it available for free from the podcast "Escape Pod" in both text and audio formats. It works well as a primer for this novel, and is also a thoroughly delightful little story that can absolutely stand on its own merits. Even if you don't pick up Catfishing on CatNet, do yourself a favour and check out the short story anyway; its very good, as is Kritzer's other short fiction.

Interesting coming of age story

I came to this audiobook after reading the author's highly entertaining short story of the same title. This is very different - for storyline reasons, a *lot* less page time is given to the AI than the humans. While the story is still interesting, compelling and satisfying, I was hoping for more of what was offered in the short story.
I found the female narrator's inflection - maybe 70% of the time finishing sentences on an upward inflection? Like she is asking a question? Rather than making a statement? Get it? - *really* distracting. But overall, a very inclusive, hopeful and interesting book that would be particularly good for gender diverse teens and young adults, and nerdy people of all ages.
