About this listen
FINALIST: The Audie Awards 2016
Audible Originals brings you a brand new audiobook adaptation of J. Sheridan Le Fanu’s classic gothic novella, Carmilla - starring Rose Leslie (Game of Thrones and Downton Abbey), David Tennant (Doctor Who and Broadchurch) and Phoebe Fox (Life in Squares and The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death).
One of the very first vampire thrillers, this audio adaptation follows 18-year-old Laura as she recounts the story of her mysterious, intriguing and beautiful house guest Carmilla, who is stranded in the forest after a carriage accident and taken in by Laura’s widowed father. The girls develop a friendship which turns into a passionate meeting of souls. A relationship of vampire and prey, the story is told through Laura’s eyes as she is drawn further into Carmilla’s terrifying world of pleasure and pain.
A masterpiece of erotic Gothic horror, Carmilla encompasses mystery, suspense, forbidden lust, violence...and lots of blood....
Carmilla has been dramatised by Robin Brooks, an actor, dramatist and author who has been working as a playwright for over 25 years. Carmilla was directed by Fiona McAlpine of Allegra Productions for Audible Originals.

Not gay as in rainbow, queer as in kissing with a mouthful of blood.
Gothic sapphic literature will forever hold a special place in my heart. Such justice brought to this story and its imagery by a beyond suited cast. In a world suffering an unfortunate shortage of queer horror, we are more than deserving of far more tales like Carmilla; this was the blueprint!! 🩸🏳️🌈🖤

Excellent old vampire story
Vampire tales have evolved greatly over the years, from their folkloric origins to modern stories of glitter and gore. This story, predating Bram Stoker's work, leans much more towards the elegant and romantic (as well as Romantic) than many before and since. A short story as audiobooks go, you can drink deep of this sanguine drama in a single evening, should such be your wish. The cast performed Carmilla brilliantly and should be deeply commended.

Much better than expected
I was very pleasantly surprised by this audible drama. To be honest I wasn’t expecting very much. However the story was very engaging and the performances were very good.

David Tennant? What are you doing in my falafel?
This audiobook hit the ball out of the park. Performances were exceptional and conveyed the nuances of character and plot which may go under appreciated in an initial reading of the novelisation (as it did for me). Adaptation from epistolary to dialogue was excellent, and maintained the tension and energy throughout. I of course particularly enjoyed the surprise performance of David Tennant, though less so his unconvincing accent. Praise must also be given to Phoebe Fox and Rose Leslie for absolutely carrying the piece with their performances. I will certainly be recommending this version in future!

What an experience!
I'm new to Audible and am amazed at how this old horror classic was brought to life in this audio edition. It's just under 2 1/2 hours and well-worth your time.
Can't wait to get into my next audiobook.
