Publisher's Summary
It is barely three months since the murder of his wife and Thomas Lynley takes to the South-West Coast Path in Cornwall, determined to walk its length in an attempt to distract himself from his loss. On the 43rd day of this walk, he sees a cliff climber fall to his death, apparently witnessed by a surfer in a nearby cove. Shortly afterwards, Lynley encounters a young woman from Bristol whose personal history is a blank before her 13th year. These events propel him into a case that brings Barbara Havers from London and thrusts both detectives into a world where revenge is only one of the motives they must sift through to identify a killer.

Well written but killed by narration
This really is about personal relationships with a murder thrown in. That doesn't mean that the process of finding the murderer is not well thought out and quite brilliant - it is both. But the interactions between the characters is the driving force and one in which George excels. As with any engaging personal dynamic, many characters were unlikeable or deeply flawed, others mildly flawed and no one was perfect (with the possible exception of Havers, who was brilliant in this book).
The narrator was my big problem. His style was overly dramatic and the voices highly unlikeable, with the exception of the obviously 'nice' characters.
In retrospect, a very good story, but a bit like pulling teeth to listen to.

The eternal issues with parenting
While investigating a murder or two the reader gets to observe the dysfunctional family dynamics mainly focusing on the relationship between fathers and sons. A great read.
