"كان ذلك في ليلةٍ من ليالي تشرين حيث النسمات الباردة تُضفي هدوءًا على أحياء لندن الغارقة بدورها في صمتٍ عميق باستثناء شارع "وول سترست" إذ كان يعجُّ برجال شرطة ونشستر الذين كانوا يحاصرون المكان بهدف اقتحام منزل ستيف روبنسون المتهم بقتل جارته فلورا!!

عند دخولهم المنزل اعترضتهم زوجته فرجينيا راجيةً بدموعها المفتش كاريلا بالانتظار ريثما تتحسّن صحة زوجها فهو مصابٌ بداء الكلى حيث أنَّ العرق يتصبب من جبينه وشدّة الألم جعلته يفقد رشده ليحطم كل ما حوله.
