About this listen
Captured, imprisoned, and...falling in love?
Arik is many things. Shaman, necromancer, a little on the snarky side...no one could ever accuse him of being boring. But one thing he never intended to be was imprisoned by angry werewolves. Maybe casting that love spell on the sexy alpha pack leader wasn't such a great idea after all.
Matthew Armitage has a problem. Several of them, actually. And the biggest one is Arik. The shaman can't be trusted. He's dangerous enough to get the entire pack killed. Matthew knows that. But knowing doesn't make it any easier to keep his mind (and hands) off Arik. Surely everything he's feeling is a side effect of the spell...right?
It's not long before enemies of the pack start circling - including one intent on claiming Arik as his unwilling mate. If they have any hope of surviving, Arik and Matthew will need to work together. And if they want a shot at happily ever after...well, they'll just have to cross that bridge when they get to it.
If they get to it....
Contains mature themes.

Story
This Series is So Good.
I love the Mismatched Mates series and I can't begin to say how delighted I am that it's in audiobook. Chris Chambers does such a good job of bringing all the characters to life, and I especially loved how he got right into the snarky, petty, jaded, insecure Arik. It's Arik's POV throughout and he's not the easiest character to like but you can feel his reasons for that... even though you may feel like slapping him here and there. Basically, you do have to warm up to Arik. Chambers brought him to life with an on point sense of humour and an understanding of Arik never having belonged anywhere. That it's difficult for him to ever let his guard down and trust. Matthew is a good, loyal and fierce pack alpha, one who's had a spell placed on him by Arik, a shaman for hire. Arik was with the Kimball pack in the last book because of Nate's awful father, Jonathon Hawthorne. The Kimball pack figures into this book as well but this time they have another pack's alpha - Parker Taft - spurring them on because the nasty b@stard wants Arik back. Arik certainly doesn't want to go back. Even though you know that the spell isn't the real reason for the connection between Arik and Matthew, there's quite a few hurdles to get our MCs over the line, including them fighting it. I like my MCs having to work for their happiness so that worked a treat for me..
You don't need to have read or listened to The Alpha's Warlock to enjoy Captive Mate but I love that I read that book first and I got to know Nate and Ian. I do love them and it was so nice to see/hear them in Captive Mate. This is a very good UF/PNR gay romance series with magic and shifters and other beings on the periphery. The world building and characters are fantastic. I can't wait until book #3 now.

A good balance of light and dark romance
This book was so much fun. I spent just as much time wiping away tears from laughing as I did flushing from the steamy romance.
The amazing way he was able to capture arsehole cat behaviour into a person was priceless. And the consentual, mature, and respectful way the sex (and past sexual assault) was handled was beautiful and heart warming and sexy.
Definitely more intense than the first book in terms of depictions of gore and past abuse, but there is still a lightness to this series that makes it a good reprieve from dark and heavy romance without being cringe worthy fluff.
