يعتبر كتاب رأس المال من أهم الأعمال الفكرية التي صدرت في القرن التاسع عشر، كما أنه يمكن أن يصنف مع منجزات فكرية كبرى مثل كتاب روح القوانين لمونتسكيو، ونقد العقل المجرد لكانت، عدا عن أنه واحد من أهم كتابين مؤسسين في العلوم الاقتصادية، إلى جانب ثروة الأمم لآدم سميث، ولكنه يعتبر أيضاً واحد من الكتب التي لم تقرأ بشكل جيد على الرغم من ادعاءات كثيرة بالتمكّن من الكتاب وأفكاره، للدرجة التي دفعت الكثير من الدول التي طبقت النظام الشيوعي وكثير من الأحزاب الشيوعية حول العالم لأن تتعامل معه بصفة لاهوتية، فحولته إلى نص مقدس طالما ادعت أنها تطبق أفكاره ومناهجه، والحقيقة أن الكتاب لم يقرأ جيداً، وكثير من المفكرين والنقاد لم يقفوا سوى على بعض المقتطفات وبأفضل الأحوال الفصول المهمة.
