About this listen

They plan to have a quiet country honeymoon. Then Lord Peter Wimsey and his bride, Harriet Vane, find the previous owner's body in the cellar.

Set in a country village seething with secrets and snobbery, this is Dorothy L. Sayers' last full-length detective novel.

Variously described as a love story with detective interruptions and a detective story with romantic interruptions, it lives up to both descriptions with style.

narration great but story struggled

I'm sorry to say that the romance/relationship themes in this story really didn't work for me. I have loved the previous Harriet/Wimsey team-up stories, but the intrigue of the mystery and the chemisty of their love affair both suffered in my opinion from the interruption of what felt like very dated musings on what it is to be husband and wife and cringey descriptions of 'passion'. There were moments of brilliance and originality, but otherwise seemed fan-fictiony and old fashioned. Interesting to read as a period piece and its impact on women readers in the 1930s. I wish the publisher could make translations of the french passages available as an appendix. I think it is unreasonable to expect modern readers/listeners to be fluent enough to understand the lengthy, untranslated sections.
