About this listen

Dee Brown's eloquent, meticulously documented account of the systematic destruction of the American Indian during the second half of the 19th century uses council records, autobiographies, and firsthand descriptions. Brown allows great chiefs and warriors of the Dakota, Ute, Sioux, Cheyenne, and other tribes to tell us in their own words of the battles, massacres, and broken treaties that finally left them demoralized and defeated. A unique and disturbing narrative told with force and clarity, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee changed forever our vision of how the West was really won - and lost.©1970 Dee Brown; Preface 2000 by Dee Brown (P)2009 Blackstone Audio, Inc. A book that is very difficult to get through such is the nature of the atrocities written about in these pages. A book that should be read by everyone!

Anyone with an interest in American history should read or listen to this book, because without it you cannot get any real perspective on how the United States came to be.

Its been at least 45 years since I originally purchased this book and then spent months reading it, as I kept having to put it down, to take a break so to speak, as the actions taken at every turn of the United States Government, its Agents and representatives was nothing short of repulsive, despicable and unfathomably cruel. Not being a beliver in the Heaven and Hell attributes of religion, I have found myself hoping the perpetrators and masterminds of the dastardly deeds inflicted upon the human beings of the mountains, plains, forests and deserts have gone to and remain in the hot place tormented.
Bury my heart at Wounded Knee is a masterful telling of history 1860 forward by Dee Brown, from the First Nations human beings point of view.
It is a valuable forewarning of the lengths and savagery the government of a country will do to its people.
However it is also speaks of resilience, honour and bravery, not just from the past but in moving forward to today and beyond.
All is not lost, there were survivors, the dna remains and life is cyclical, just as the Sun sets, it will rise again.
Highly recommended read/listen for any true historical buff.
The narrator in this version was clear and easy to listen to, despite the difficult subject matter.

First draft of Lies, greed and genocide.

Horrific events of American history that has largely gone untold. Devastating, moving and a must read for all.

Piercing, chilling and moving.

A true, terrible, shameful, sad insight into the tearing down of a peaceful proud culture. This account is also indicative of the treatment of all peaceful indigenous peoples exposed to 'civilized' western white people, and the destruction of cultures and ways of life globally.

A Must Listen!
