Publisher's Summary
Random House presents the audiobook edition of Burnout by Amelia Nagoski and Emily Nagoski, read by Emily Nagoski.
This groundbreaking book explains why women experience burnout differently than men - and provides a simple, science-based plan to help women minimize stress, manage emotions and live a more joyful life.
The gap between what it's really like to be a woman and what people expect women to be is a primary cause of burnout, because we exhaust ourselves trying to close the space between the two. How can you 'love your body' when everything around you tells you you're inadequate? How do you 'lean in' at work when you're already giving 110% and aren't recognized for it? How can you live happily and healthily in a world that is constantly telling you you're too fat, too needy, too noisy and too selfish? Sisters Emily Nagoski, Ph.D., the bestselling author of Come as You Are, and Amelia Nagoski, DMA, are here to help end the cycle of overwhelm and exhaustion, and confront the obstacles that stand between women and well-being. With insights from the latest science, prescriptive advice, and helpful worksheets and exercises, Burnout reveals:
* what you can do to complete the biological stress cycle - and return your body to a state of relaxation.
* how to manage the 'monitor' in your brain that regulates the emotion of frustration.
* how the Bikini Industrial Complex makes it difficult for women to love their bodies - and how to fight back.
* why rest, human connection, and befriending your inner critic are key to recovering from and preventing burnout.
Eye-opening, compassionate and optimistic, Burnout will completely transform the way we think about and manage stress, empowering women to thrive under pressure and enjoy meaningful yet balanced lives. All women will find something transformative in these pages - and be empowered to create positive and lasting change.

Life changing
I thought it was in my head. I thought I was imagining it. Turns out women are slowly killing ourselves and our bodies are trying to tell us and we are not listening. This book changed my life. I bought it for everyone and haven’t stopped talking about it anyone who would listen. The data is frightening and compelling. I deep dived into everything the author ever said and wrote and believe EN is my new BFF.

As good as they've said
There is a reason this is being raved about. Like all advice and guidance, not all of it will be relevant to everyone right now, but the bits that strike a cord are worth it.

Required reading for surviving the modern world
The insights from this book are invaluable. Learning about completing the stress cycle was revolutionary for me. I like being able to separate the stress from the stressors and deal with them appropriately. And the stories from the rest of the book are such a beautiful reframe of the expectations of society. I feel more able and confident about releasing the old ideals and being more fully myself. Can’t recommend this highly enough. Well written, well researched and beautifully validating of the authors lived experience. Validates our own experience in unexpected ways. Thank you Amelia and Emily.

This book stressed me out, can you tell
I loved Emily Nagoski's other book Come As You Are, but this one just stressed me out. All the talk of the patriarchy and society's unfair expectations of women really just upset me but then the tools offered didn't help me with those feelings. If you are going to read this but already know how shit the world is, go read Come As You Are instead. it's got all the same great Stress response info, but without so much negativity, and also has bonus content about your sex-life. I really wanted to know more about how to complete the stress response cycle but its all the same stuff - meditate, exercise, sleep, change your life so its less stressful. I can't do any of that anymore than I already am and I'm still in knots, even more so now this book has me feeling oppressed and also that I will be fat forever no matter what I try so why bother. I accept their science that overweight doesn't equal unhealthy and my bloodtests back that up, but my joints disagree with my weight so regardless of societal pressures and vanity I was still hoping I could shift weight for the sake of my aging, aching bones. I am stressed out and sad about being a woman and I'm sad about being fat forever and no amount of "gratitude" is going to erase the patriarchy so why did you even suggest that?
Edit: originally gave book 3 stars but have now changed to 5 stars because it really made me think for days and days afterwards and now I have kind of... "huh I see what you did there" reaction. Still not feeling better about society but the first step to fixing a problem is recognising the problem. Read this book!

good
I couldn't stand the readers "ugh" after saying key words. I know they are trying to add emotion to the story but it isn't for me. When delivering key messages the music in the background is annoying but that is my personal preference. The book overall is good and I would recommend it.

Tremendous.
I very much enjoyed this incredibly uplifting book as it is a beautiful guide for every femme identifying person who, like myself, takes on far too much responsibility for management of other people's ugly feelings. Excellent.
