About this listen
Winner of the inaugural ASA/HQ Commercial Fiction Prize. The twists keep piling up in this fun and distinctively Australian debut mystery, perfect for fans of The Thursday Murder Club and Janet Evanovich.
Brick Brown has problems: she hates her day job, and her beloved Uncle Baz has gone missing.
Although a bartender by trade, Brick Brown has finagled herself a job on the city council to investigate a complaint that threatens to close her uncle's well-loved blues club in the heart of Melbourne.
Brick suspects something strange is going on, but when her amateur sleuthing uncovers the mayor's dead body in a locked room, she's dragged into the dangerous world of dodgy developers with the reluctant help of Mitch Mitchell, a prickly war correspondent turned investigative journalist.
Relying on her street smarts and an unlikely band of allies, Brick and Mitchell unearth corruption that runs deeper than just local government, and the stakes are higher than they banked on. And when Brick also discovers some terrifying information about her past, the stakes turn deadly...

One of my top books of the year!
Loved this great mystery set in Melbourne’s inner north. Would love to revisit this set of characters and places again if there is ever a sequel.

A crime novel, researched and written as only a journalist could
No loose ends or holes in the plot here. It’s fiction but the level of detail and research make this feel like ‘true-crime’

Fun with farcical story with punches
An intriguing story unravels with great humour and cynicism being espoused by the hero. Set in Melbourne, the author has some good insights into the corruption of politics by land developers and property acquisitions

Truly wonderful
What a wonderful story set with Melbourne as its backdrop. I recognised streets and could picture the places this book was set. So much going on in this story to keep you well and truly hooked and such beautiful characters that you can’t help but relate to

Written for folks from Melbourne
I feel like this book was written for folks from Melbourne as the way the city was brought to life was by namedropping a bunch of streets and landmarks. I also felt like the best mystery (the one that drew me in) got brushed aside and then when it was finally explained it fell flat for me.
