About this listen

Ben

Spark of Hope: A bi-weekly trauma support group. This is my nightmare. When I think of a support group, I think of sad people sitting around talking about their feelings and nothing changing.

And yet, when my brother and his best friend, who happens to be a therapist, presented the idea of holding the meetings at my gym, I caved.

Because I, Benjamin Price, have always tried to rescue the people in my life. But I can’t. I’ve usually failed them.

Now, I’m hosting a trauma support group and desperately trying not to fall into my old habits—of attempting to save everyone.

And then, he walks in. Bruised. But not broken. No matter how exhausted he may feel, a strength in him calls to me.

And there’s no way I can ignore the need deep inside me to at least try.

Colby

I’m tired. I’m afraid. And I don’t want to go back. Not to the abusive relationship I told myself I was okay with for years.

But what am I supposed to do?

I have no real life skills. All my life, I’ve been told I’m pretty and that’s it. Then I walk into a gym, looking for a job, but I find so much more.

I don’t want to trust Ben. I don’t believe his help doesn’t come with a price. But what choice do I really have?

One thing’s for sure: neither of us are getting out of this intact. What we lose though, that’s anyone’s guess.

Bruised But Not Broken is set around a trauma support group and will, therefore, touch on extremely sensitive subjects. The author handles these topics with care and healing, but please heed this trigger warning should it apply to you.

Colby has fled a physically and mentally abusive relationship. Penniless, he asks about a job at a local gym and something about him triggers the protective streak in Benjamin Price, the gym owner, who offers him a position on the spot. Ben’s friend, Felix, is a counsellor and he’s keen to set up a support group for trauma sufferers called Spark of Hope, while Ben’s brother and policeman, Roman, will teach defence classes to the group. Colby and Ben are reluctant to join the group so they start their own informal sessions together, sharing the tribulations each has experienced and, slowly, both men trigger love and healing in the other.

There’s something about Nicole Dykes writing that I really love, she has a great way of sketching very human main characters, the perfect mix of flaws and decency. I’ve read similar angsty romances but didn’t find this depressing or smaltzy. I liked the size difference between Ben (big and muscly) and Colby (slim and more petite) and I appreciated the difficult backstories that made them the men they were. I wasn’t sure about some of the support group protocols but I chalked it up to artistic license. Equally, I found Roman irritating a bit, so I’m looking forward to seeing him redeem himself in his upcoming book. I’m not a huge fan of angsty stories but I liked the balance here and I’ll definitely chase up the rest of the series. 🎧 I love Michael Dean (as Ben) and Stephen Dexter (as Colby), I thought they both did a great job on the audio!

Angsty, thoughtful and steamy!

The romance was well-paced and believable, given the circumstances and Ben having never been with a man. A lot of abuse occured off-page in the past but it’s dealt with well. The narrators were good but I feel they should’ve been given the opposite characters to read.

Great story

it's not often someone is willing to talk about men suffering at the hands of an abuser but Nicole Dykes handles the subject with care and empathy.
yes it's very much a love story as well
unfortunately the narrators came across a bit wooden and at times it sounded a bit like someone just reading aloud. but otherwise was a good book

a tough subject well handled

It was a little rushed and not delved into enough. There was room to develop the characters, it would have been good to see them discover their emotions.
The narrator’s should have been switched, the current voices didn’t match in my mind.

Ok, easy listen

I listened to the audiobook for this one and it was very well performed. I liked the story, but I have a feeling it would have been more of a 3 star if I read it with my eyeballs. A recommended 3 star.

Good story made great by narration
