تدور أحداث رواية "الأجنحة المتكسرة" حول أول قصة حب لجبران وتأثيرها العميق على حياته فيما بعد، حيث كانت قصة حبه لسلمى كرامة والتي كانت لها نهايتها التراجيدية، فيسرد القصة من النهاية إلى البداية. فيعود إلى البداية، عندما زار أحد أصدقائه وتعرف على رجل غني هو فارس كرامة. وقد كان صديق خليل جبران والد جبران في أيام شبابه ، فطلب منه أن يزوره في بيته ليحدثه عن والده، وليعرفه على ابنته.

فقام الكاتب بهذه الرواية التي غيرت حياته عندما تعرف على ابنته سلمى، فأحبها من أول نظرة واستمر بزيارتهم وبشكل منظم ، وازدادت معرفته بسلمى وزاد حبة وتعلّقه بها.

وفي ذات يوم ذهب لتناول العشاء في بيت السيد كرامة، وعندما كانوا يتحدثون دخل خادم المطران ليطلب من السيد كرامة الذهاب للقاء المطران لأمر مهم. وبذهاب الأب كانت الفرصة ليبوح لسلمى بحبه لها، وبادلته الشعور عند ذلك.

لكن عند عودة السيد فارس من لقاء المطران أخبر سلمى بخبر زواجها القريب من ابن أخ المطران، كان من المعروف عنه طمعه ورغبته بالحصول على أملاك السيد كرامة.

وتستمر القصة لتخبرنا عن أول حب في حياة جبران خليل جبران.
