About this listen

After years of drowning myself in parties, hookups, and pain, all it takes is one viral sex tape to be given a choice: Hide out on an island or lose my trust fund.

Having to share a room with the one man I let hurt me is my worst nightmare. I’m the broken shell of the boy he walked away from on the worst day of my life. I hate him almost as much as I hate myself.

This island was supposed to be a place I could rest, but instead, I’m running. From Asher Vaughn. From myself. From the scars on my heart that never healed.

It hurts to look at him and see all the things we never got to have.

How can I keep him at arm's length when he watches me the way he used to? When he touches me? When he calls me his?

We can’t be together, not off this island. The straight football star and the gay femme son of famous parents. The media would rip us apart and ruin his career.

I barely survived the last time he left me. Can I survive being deserted again?

Broken is a brother’s best friend, mm romance with some praise kink, and a broken boy in desperate need of love.

Good idea, not executed right

States strong and the characters were good, but the story dragged out and I felt lacking with the development.

Exhausting emotional roller coaster!

Closeted pro footballer Asher Vaughn is in love with his best friend Marcus’s younger brother, Elliot (Eli). They’ve only stolen kisses but when Marcus finds out he hits the roof and the tussle ends tragically in Marcus’s death. Everyone is devastated by the loss of Marcus and Asher absents himself from the dysfunction of Eli and his family. Neither Asher nor Eli are really coping but fate gives them another chance at happiness by booking them both into the same room at the Black Diamond Mental Health Spa!

This unhappy forced-proximity / sports romance is for people who like their angsty melodrama dialled up to Eleven! Asher and Eli are miserable most of the time as they sob, yell, and bonk their way through to the final pages—it’s pretty exhausting. I could sympathise with their respective traumas but I found Eli childish at best; Asher at least grew as a person. I was really puzzled by the Black Diamond Resort. Asher and Eli were sent there to sort themselves out but there were no therapies and one staff member flirted with the guests and sold them drugs. It all seemed to be pretty lax and I wasn’t surprised they both came out worse than they went in! 🎧 Darcy Stark (as Eli) and Iggy Toma (as Asher) channeled the angst well in the audio and there is a happy ending but I can’t say I enjoyed the emotional ride.
