Publisher's Summary

I was born and broken in Birkenhead, abused from infancy by a network of every kind of pervert from ‘thinks it’s love’ to ‘show it hurts’. I was unwanted, beaten, sold, swapped, photographed, filmed, left for dead, corrupted, blamed, betrayed, ignored and orphaned.

But I was also born with a fire inside me. I call it my Phoenix Fire. I am no victim—that word only describes what happened to me. Nor am I a survivor because that implies I am over it. I am a Phoenix—a work in progress. This is my story....

"Beaten, left for dead and raped from the age of four, but now a national campaigner—Shy Keenan, we salute you." (Eve magazine)

Persistence in the face of disbelief

I applaud Shy’s persistence despite the continued disbelief she had encountered through her life. The best part I like about this book is how fearless and courageous Shy is about openly exposing the very real flaws of the abusive child “protection” system. Too often these systems will place themselves first by protecting themselves rather than to put in any effort to help repair the damages they have created. So many of these systems prefer to pay high priced lawyers instead of taking the often lower cost option of compensating their victims so that they may be able to afford to obtain some healing and comfort and enable them to turn their lives around for the better. Too often children in their “care” have been abused and programmed/conditioned (I refuse to use the misleading word “groomed”) and left wide open to be easier targets for further abuse in these systems. So many people have taken on such child “protection” systems world wide. With every case against these systems (so called experts in child “protection” who actually can do the most damage to children) the more it enables them to learn and improve their systems. Such systems rarely learn, believe or listen to those abused in their “care”, unless they are made to pay for such crimes. This is when these systems then try to improve, to avoid more future costs. Only those with experience being in such systems know best what would had helped them most and the changes that need to be done. Such things cant be learnt in universities from those with no experience. The battle against child abuses and systemic child abuses are growing movements and world wide there are so many individuals and groups who have experienced such horrors all working tirelessly advocating for much needed changes and improvements and Shy is also a part of these much needed movements. I think the narrator of this story let it down and I found that as the narrator read many sentences and statements using a tone that falsely implied it was a question. I found that irritating. However this should not reflect poorly in any way on this book, the story is harrowing, horrific and compelling, yet also shows much bravery, resilience, courage, strength and determination. Thank you Shy for sharing your story (this is no easy feat after facing much of your life not being believed) and thank you for all that you do for the movements against child abuses.

A heartbreaking and disturbing true story

This true story was so heartbreaking to hear. It was well written and narrated. I felt on the edge of my seat praying and hoping this child would be saved. So many obstacles she faced and continuous setbacks, so many horrible moments in her life that was her daily existence. The evil people that abused her and the twisted system that didn’t protect her. All so shocking and horrifying. I was in awe of her (Shy’s bravery) Thank you for telling your story, achieving so much for others,

Incredible Heartbreaking Read

I read Shy’s book about 10 years ago. I knew that I need to re-read it again. It is just an incredible story that just crushes your soul to know what she went through all the letdowns by all the people that could’ve saved her and all the others. I wish I could save that little girl and all the other kids in the world suffering anything even close to the suffering that Shy went through. It’s a horrible world out there. What a read, so well written. Highly recommend and be prepared for your heart to hurt 💔
