Siebenundneunzig Jahre waren vergangen, seitdem römische Truppen das große Inselland im nordwestlichen Ozean betreten und unterworfen und wiederum verlassen hatten, bevor die römische Regierung sich entschloss, die Fahrt zu wiederholen und Britannien bleibend zu besetzen. Allerdings war Cäsars britannische Expedition nicht bloß, wie seine Züge gegen die Germanen, ein defensiver Vorstoß gewesen. So weit sein Arm reichte, hatte er die einzelnen Völkerschaften reichsuntertänig gemacht und ihre Jahresabgabe an das Reich hier wie in Gallien geordnet.
Theodor Mommsen erhielt als erster Deutscher 1902 den Nobelpreis für Literatur.
