About this listen

With 265,000 cases in the UK alone, chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is more common than people may think, yet is poorly understood. Breaking Free fills this gap in knowledge, providing a route to recovery.

Across nine chapters, it shows that the cycle of exhaustion, poor concentration, loss of memory and pain can be broken, and that there is real hope of recovery. In addition to covering CFS, the author outlines connected areas of post viral fatigue (PVF), explaining how to tackle protracted symptoms that can arise following contracting Covid.

Given that in November 2021, it was reported by Office of National Statistics that over one million people in the UK were experiencing Long Covid symptoms, Breaking Free is more essential than ever. Listeners will benefit from the clear and tested step-by-step guide offered by a woman who has not only done it herself, but who has helped 1,000 people fight their way out of a serious condition back to a healthy and productive life.

With the support of a media campaign, listeners will find that Breaking Free offers a comprehensive, informative, and supportive guide to recovery from CFS and Long Covid symptoms that sustains its relevancy and importance.

A great concept, but a little binary

I love the idea of positivity and the relentless pursuit of healing. I agree with the focus of getting out of the sympathetic nervous system as one key component of recovery.

I worry that the order of this book means that people new to the chronic illness won’t get the message early enough that you must rest at first. I also believe that long COVID is more complex than chronic fatigue and would prefer that this be positioned more in partnership with many helpful medications that can complement the premise of this book.

In my opinion, the use of so many long anagrams and metaphors makes the book harder to comprehend, especially for sufferers with brain fog.

Interesting read, but not the whole answer

This is an interesting read, and I'm glad the author and some others have been able to recover this way. However, it's not suited to all CFS/ME sufferers - it's relevant to those who are suddenly bed-bound and are afraid to become active again. It doesn't really help those who are too active by necessity and need to slow down to recover - in this scenario pacing is actually imperative, and going past your limits will harm, however you think about it. The concept of recovery in the book is mainly around neuroplasticity and positive thinking, which is helpful and certainly a factor in all cases, but it doesn't cover a lot else. However I'm sure it will help some people in the right category.
