Publisher's Summary
Random House presents the audiobook edition of Braving the Wilderness, written and read by Brené Brown.
'True belonging doesn't require us to change who we are. It requires us to be who we are.' Social scientist Brené Brown, PhD, LMSW has sparked a global conversation about the experiences that bring meaning to our lives - experiences of courage, vulnerability, love, belonging, shame and empathy. In Braving the Wilderness, Brown redefines what it means to truly belong in an age of increased polarisation. With her trademark mix of research, storytelling and honesty, Brown will again change the cultural conversation while mapping out a clear path to true belonging.
Brown argues that what we're experiencing today is a spiritual crisis of disconnection, and introduces four practices of true belonging that challenge everything we believe about ourselves and each other. She writes, 'True belonging requires us to believe in and belong to ourselves so fully that we can find sacredness both in both being a part of something, and in standing alone when necessary. But in a culture that's rife with perfectionism and pleasing, and with the erosion of civility, it's easy to stay quiet, hide in our ideological bunkers, or fit in rather than show up as our true selves and brave the wilderness of uncertainty and criticism. But true belonging is not something we negotiate or accomplish with others; it's a daily practice that demands integrity and authenticity. It's a personal commitment that we carry in our hearts.' Brown offers us the clarity and courage we need to find our way back to ourselves and to each other. And that path cuts right through the wilderness.
Brown writes, 'The wilderness is an untamed, unpredictable place of solitude and searching. It is a place as dangerous as it is breathtaking, a place as sought after as it is feared. But it turns out to be the place of true belonging, and it's the bravest and most sacred place you will ever stand.'
Editorial reviews
Internationally best-selling author and renowned social scientist, Brené Brown has made a career out of studying the deep emotions and experiences that shape our lives. Her Braving the Wilderness is a self-help classic on why belonging is crucial to our mental health.
Brené Brown has sold millions of books in more than 40 different languages, including five number one New York Times best sellers. She is one of the most sought-after speakers in the world, and her TED talk on the power of vulnerability is one of the most popular of all time. She has inspired countless students and worked with CEOs, military leaders, elite athletes, activists and creatives.
In Braving the Wilderness, Brown delivers a timely message: we all must belong to something, someone, or somewhere. She shares stories of her own struggles with belonging, as well as research into the importance of connection and practices for both believing in ourselves and reaching out to others. In today’s polarised world, Brown encourages listeners to find where they truly belong, with integrity.
Not surprisingly, Brown is a polished and compelling narrator of her own books. Her soothing Texan drawl and positive, optimistic outlook on life has struck a chord with millions of people globally, and they shine through in this audiobook. Like Oprah Winfrey, Brown has the ability to package her message and personality in a way that connects with people from all walks of life. One listener described Braving the Wilderness as '...a wonderful exploration on how we show up in the world. How we can be brave and authentic whilst respecting ourselves and others. Take up the challenge'.

You lost me: but with your wisdom found my way back
Thank you for your research and the deep thought, the permutations and calisthenics of your mind, and your clarity in encoding it all for me, us. You lost me at the hunting story but gathered me back when you spoke from your heart. An important step in my wildernessing: respect and kindness towards difference.

Inspiring, insightful and challenging
I love Brenes way of so easily getting across the research and building it in a way that it speaks to us all, no matter what our beliefs or stage of life.
I also love that Brene has narrated this herself, it brings another level of value, connectedness and trust to her writing and work.

Brene never disappoints.
I would find it hard to believe if someone said they didnt get at least one gem of insight from this book.
I have all Brene's books and this one for me reallly solidifies messages from much of her earlier work.
Well delivered. Consice and clear.
Starting to like the texan accent too. :-)

Will listen again and again
I love Brene’s voice. Her messages are powerful and sometimes I wished I wasn’t driving and listening so I could write down some of the powerful words! I’m going to listen again and that’s unlike me. Main takeaway for me is: it’s hard to hate close up - move in. Thank you!

Joy is OK. It’s needed.
Hearing Brené’s voice sends words into my brain that challenge many other words sent there over my 50 plus years. Sometimes there’s an instant aha moment. Sometimes there’s confusion and many days of processing and re-listening. My favourite part is in chapter 7. The final chapter. Finally I can be ok to amazing amounts of joy in my life. And wallow in the extra joy I feel when I share them. So thank you Brené. I’m packing my bags to travel into the bush (that’s what we call it in Australia!) and going to enjoy the journey...
