About this listen

I always knew I was different.

I'd thought it had to be hidden - to stay a secret.

I didn't know my secret would become the key to my survival.

Turning 18 and getting accepted into college brings me everything I need to escape from the nightmares of my past but I never could have imagined my nightmares - and dreams - were just beginning. Finding myself thrown into a world of fantasy, politics, friendships, and rules that are nearly impossible to understand, I feel like I'm drowning in a world of shifters I never knew existed. As I struggle to find my place and prevent my nightmares from tearing me apart, I find myself surrounded by an unusual group of sexy men. With Hiro, Killian, Theo, Damien, and Ryder I'm trying to become the woman I've always wanted to be, if my past, and my future, will let me.

Contains mature themes.

I like it but…

I liked this one but I didn’t like that the storyline was serious but their sifted forms were a bit silly - one is a kraken and another a unicorn. Just irked me.

Okay story but what is with the accents?

THe inconsistent performance of the accents was just so distracting, I couldn’t enjoy the novel. I understand the actors probably did their best but if you can’t do a Scottish accent, don’t try…

AMAZING!

This was an amazing audiobook! I absolutely loved all of the perspectives and the tensions that you can feel between all protagonists written between (and of course within) all of the words. Both narrators were amazing in this audiobook and seriously brought a whole ‘nother perspective to them that I wouldn't have gotten from reading it on my kindle. As a fellow Australian, I did have to cringe at some of the accents, but after a while, I kind of zoned out to it and didn't think about it. My advice with this book ... don't knit pick and then you will find a lot more enjoyment out of the whole story. I will definitely be reading the next book! How could you not with that ending? If you have read the blurb to this book and are on the fence about whether you want to read it but think you might like it then I urge you to read it! I hope you find you love this book just as much as I do! Enjoy!

The male reader was brilliant.

The only reason why I liked the book was the male reading the book. All the males sounded different. they had there own accents. He did a great woman voice as well. I didn't like the female reader. half the time I couldn't tell if she was reading for the female or the male. I think she does one accent different from the female. but it's faint. it comes and goes. The story line was weak. came in and out.

terrible accent warning!

This is probably just best suited to actual book form rather than audiobook, as multiple accents required of two narrators is a big ask, and both painfully fail. (there's an Aussie, a Scot? and an English accent, plus more that are who knows what) Aside from that, the story get me in and I came to enjoy the found family unit. Not great literature but not bad. Ends with a cliffhanger, but it did feel like a whole book (unlike others that feel like isolated chapters).

Great story, disappointing narration.

I was immediately captivated by this story. It had a successful start that pulled me in. I loved the characters and found the world very interesting. I appreciated the character building and slow burn.
Unfortunately, the story did not make up for the narration issues. For starters, I will never understand the point of getting a male and female narrator, but not having the girl do the girl voices and the man do the man voices! I thought Brandon Utah did an okay job of the girl voices in his chapters, but I HATED Heather Costa's attempt at the male voices and her accents were even worse. Also, nit-picky maybe, but I hate a badly done Aussie accent. At least Brandon attempted, even though it sounded a mix between American and New Zealand accent. But I don't actually think Heather tried to do accents at all, never mind change the tone of her voice for different characters. I could not tell if she was narrating a man or woman's voice and especially couldn't tell which character she was voicing. The Scottish accent attempts were pretty bad too I thought.
Anyway, I don't mean to be harsh, but I am used to a higher standard with my audiobooks (just finished the Haret Chronicles which had amazing duet narration with multiple successful & absolutely seamless accents). I just can't help but feel like this is several steps down from that and also such a missed opportunity to have two narrators but not a propper duet narration!

Easy listening, annoying narration

Tried really hard to like this one, but the New Zealander doing a terrible Australian accent is driving me bananas.

***THE PHOENIX***

It's a heartbreaking story of a girl that can not die. She was abused so bad by the one person who should have have protected her. I loved this book I have read it but I want to listen it it as well. Heather Costa and Brandon Utah are both brilliant in their narratives. I can't wait to dive in to book 2.

Good story, narrators are frustrating.

I'm enjoying this series so far but the accents are terrible! The male narrator can not do an Australian accent, it's a messy blend of Australian, New Zealand, British (and I'm a New Zealander who lives in Australia), it gets annoying. The Scottish accent is better but still muddled and when doing the females parts, he makes them sound bratty and attitude filled. When not putting on an accent or female voice he's great!
The female does a great job with the female voices and tells the story well, but she is absolutely terrible with the men's accents and they all tend to sound the same.
I'm interested to what happens in the series but I'm really struggling with the narrators.
