Publisher's Summary

Dale Hanson takes us from a northern Minnesota boyhood to the incredible stresses of US special operations during the Vietnam War, the deadly world of MAC-V-SOG, the top-secret Special Forces project that conducted America’s secret war against the Communist forces on the Ho Chi Minh Trail. Shrouded in mystery and equipped with exotic weaponry, SOG operators suffered casualty rates in excess of 100 percent for three successive years.

Dale Hanson served with Recon Team Florida during one of the legendary missions of SOG, the killing of an enemy colonel who was carrying super-secret documents of enormous importance to the American war effort. After intense fighting, those documents were brought back by the team. Dale survived and went on to serve three tours with the legendary special operations group.

Critic Reviews

“Fifty years after the eight-year secret war ended in Vietnam, well-written non-fiction books by SOG recon men are surfacing. Add Born Twice by Dale Hanson—who served three tours of duty during the war—to the growing list of SOG books. Hanson’s Born Twice is actually a story within a story. He brilliantly sets the stage for being hunted by communist soldiers on the ground in Laos in the dark of night, casually mentioning the damage his fingers sustained following face-to-face combat with three AK-47-firing enemy soldiers. Then he deftly shifts gears, taking you through his childhood in Ojibway country in northern Minnesota and his coming of age before joining the Army. Both aspects of this proud Green Beret’s history make for a fascinating read. This isn’t his first book and I hope it’s not his last.” (John Stryker Meyer, author of Across the Fence: The Secret War in Vietnam, On The Ground, and SOG Chronicles: Volume One)

Fantastic book highly recommended

Such a fantastic book read by the author which I think gives so much more to the book. As a medically discharged soldier on vet pension. I now live with just my service dog as service also took my 14 yr marriage and 2 great kids. I would like to thank you for your story from before during and how it can be hard to leave places others will never understand. Also thank you for putting in the SASR Australia, as our government still doesn’t even give those diggers from long tan any information to our school kids only others wars and Gallipoli which the English used us as canon fodder. It was so refreshing to hear our soldiers being bought up as we have always come when called by our allies. Always giving our best, I just hope times are not making weak links with all the PC that seems to have divided people and done nothing to benefit anyone but there 10 min of banter on tv. I’m going through as many SOG books, as again sounds terrible but military has a way towards humour and each other, that just still I miss that trust and brotherhood. Stay strong to all of you, it would be such a pleasure to meet you guys. As be an honour to crack a cold beer or what ever. Much respect to those who tread where many many would never dare to take a step. Cheers 🫡🪖🇦🇺

What a Story!!

Oh boy, what an amazing journey you took me on. Thank you Dale, I have loved every word.
I was surprised how much of the book was spent on your childhood and that is rare in a lot of the Vietnam memoirs I’ve read lately but greatly appreciated, it builds a great picture.
I was enthralled the whole way through and had tears welling up in parts, I didn’t want it to end.

Thanks for your service SOG warrior
