En forårsaften i 2007 blev borgmesteren i Nagasaki, Iccho Itoh, likvideret, da han blev skudt på åben gade. Iccho Itoh var han i gang med at føre sin tredje valgkampagne, da han blev dræbt. Morderen var en mand ved navn Tesuya Shiroo, der var leder af en lokal bande med tilknytning til den japanske mafia, men det viste sig, at mordet ikke havde noget at gøre med den japanske mafia.
