Publisher's Summary

Author of the National Book Award-winning All the Pretty Horses, Cormac McCarthy is one of the most provocative American stylists to emerge in the last century. The striking novel Blood Meridian offers an unflinching narrative of the brutality that accompanied the push west on the 1850s Texas frontier.

Critic Reviews

“The authentic American apocalyptic novel…I venture that no other living American novelist, not even Pynchon, has given us a book as strong and memorable as Blood Meridian.” (Harold Bloom)
"McCarthy is a writer to be read, to be admired, and quite honestly envied." (Ralph Ellison)
"McCarthy is a born narrator, and his writing has, line by line, the stab of actuality. He is here to stay." (Robert Penn Warren)

Better than promised

McCarthys writing style creates books that the reader brings to life with their own inflection. This narrator did a great job with the work.

Great book

great book but I found it hard to follow. The writing is extremely technical and descriptive and really puts you in location. This is backed up by a very skilled narrator who has an absolutely perfect voice for the job.

Barbarity before Beauty

A debauched odyssey of warfare, religious philosophy and nation building. A mesmerising vile nightmare of savage poetry. Its American Gothic literature at its finest. A justifiable perversion of the romanticized wild west where the depths of wickedness and depravity are explored without censorship. McCarthy juxtaposes the beauty of the landscape with the ceaseless violence of the men who sought to conquer it. Relaxing read.

Not for the faint hearted

A brutal journey into the depths of the human condition, and hell itself. Judge Holden towers a voice Western Literature as its most terrifying figure.

A+++

I have loved this book since I first picked it up, and the audiobook version is incredible. The narration really adds depth to the overall story and I was really impressed with his commitment to his portrayal of the characters. Highly recommend.

Outstanding

Spooky good prose, brilliantly evocative of a far away time of blood & dust... narration of Poe is A-grade and the substance of the work is undeniable ... highly recommend

A enthralling danse macarbre

Not for the faint of heart, but an unforgettable meditation on cruelty, humanity and war for those who endure its harrowing depictions of genocidal violence on the western frontiers.

A western by Hieronymus Bosch

A poetic but vividly gruelling epic that really only works as allegory. Everything and everyone can be read as symbol, which was, if I’m honest, the only way I could get through it. At the same time, I kept thinking of parallels with Australian frontier history and our national attempts to avoid facing it. The bottom line is that this is a masterpiece but, like many masterpieces, it demands serious commitment from its readers.
