About this listen

From award-winning author Ilona Andrews comes an all-new novel set in the New York Times number-one best-selling Kate Daniels' world, featuring Julie Lennart-Olsen, Kate and Curran's ward.

Atlanta was always a dangerous city. Now, as waves of magic and technology compete for supremacy, it’s a place caught in a slow apocalypse, where monsters spawn among the crumbling skyscrapers and supernatural factions struggle for power and survival.

Eight years ago, Julie Lennart left Atlanta to find out who she was. Now she’s back with a new face, a new magic, and a new name - Aurelia Ryder - drawn by the urgent need to protect the family she left behind. An ancient power is stalking her adopted mother, Kate Daniels, an enemy unlike any other, and a string of horrifying murders is its opening gambit.

If Aurelia’s true identity is discovered, those closest to her will die. So her plan is simple: Get in, solve the murders, prevent the prophecy from being fulfilled, and get out without being recognized. She expected danger, but she never anticipated that the only man she'd ever loved could threaten everything.

One small misstep could lead to disaster. But for Aurelia, facing disaster is easy. It’s relationships that are hard.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book.

The writing team of Ilona Andrews has kept me happy for years. I read and reread the various series, and now I have the joy of listening to them as well.

This is the start of a new series based on Julie Lennart. and is a new take on the Kate Daniels world. Tulip (the messy eater) is by far my favourite character. There have been wonderfully dark developments to every one's characters and in looking forward to the next book. (And all the next books in all of the series running at the moment).

The reader puts in a good performance, but has an "Oh Wow" inflection to the reading which i found vaguely irritating, and gave a teen reader feel to the book. (I'm also still cross that Renee Raudman didn't read the last Inkeeper book but that's another story).

I was a bit worried

I have all of Ilona Andrews books and I must admit to being a bit worried about everyone's reviews that the new narrator did not do the book justice...To be honest, it's been so long that one of these books have come out that I did not worry so much that her pronunciation of various words weren't the same as Renee's...yes if she'd listened to one of the other books she may have done it perfectly, but for her I guess it's just a job and she does her best as it is given to her. Who has the time to research each job detail? However, she does a fantastic job and if you are new it won't matter. The writing and story is wonderful...the narration ultimately does not detract over much.

Awesome!

No surprises here - I LOVED Blood Heir. I have all the love for Aurelia/Julie, and Derek. That little tease at the end, I can't wait to see how the storyline progresses between these 2.

So wonderful seeing some other favourite characters 8 years on, and how their lives have changed in the years Julie has been away. Bring on the next book in the series!!!!

Suzanne Elise Freeman is a new to me narrator - she did a wonderful performance with the storyline & characters.

Perfect but I need more

I have been holding off reading this because of the come down I knew I would have. as normal it was perfect and amazing and breath taking. for those noting the narrator changed words - it was by direction from the Andrews and how I wish the original had been read as its how I have always said it.

Brilliant story, average performance

The story is great, and I’m pleased I read the written version before listening to this. Julie is all grown up and a force to be reckoned with. She has a carnivorous horse which adds a interesting level of humour. Derek has walked his own path and clearly has quite a back story we haven’t yet been told. There’s quite a bit of explanatory dialogue that as an avid Kate Daniels reader I could have done without, but I understand that, when relaunching the world it would be included. Great characters, good story line, good battle scenes, great world building. Excellent unresolved romantic tension.

And then there is the but… it’s an average performance. Julie is supposed to be a 26 year old magical powerhouse with experience and mad skills to defend her kingdom, yet she sounds like a slightly vacuous teenager that doesn’t really care. It’s hard to ride the highs and lows when the delivery is quite monotonous. And the male voices were poor. Hard to distinguish, and imagine my discomfort when I got to the epilogue to find out Granddad sounded just like Derek.

Definitely a great book, but not a great reading of the book.

Julie grown up

Great I know what happened to Julie and Derek after KD book 10. Plenty to get on with future adventures for both. 😀😀

great story, narrator took the punch out

Having safely listened and relistened and in order with all the KD books, the narrator really dimmed the series. I don't think she meant to read it that way, but the punch and pop that House Andrews wrote into the story just didn't land well. I find myself listening and reimagining how the previous narrator (Renee Raudman) would read it, especially the beats in the conversation between Julie and Derek.
