About this listen

When Sienna Hegarty turns up at his family home one night, covered in blood and frozen in shock, psychologist Joe O'Loughlin finds himself drawn deep into her world, trying to unearth the dark secrets her mind has buried. The police find a major piece of the puzzle at Sienna’s house: her father, a retired cop, is face-down in a pool of his own blood, his throat slashed and his skull caved in. The blood covering Sienna was his.

The 14-year-old can’t remember what happened that night but, at the same time, Sienna doesn’t mourn her father’s death. What was going on behind closed doors in the Hegarty household? Is Sienna guilty of brutal murder? And what part has her charismatic teacher, Gordon Ellis, played in this blood-soaked event?

Another great book in this series.

I was sad to finish this book but not to worry there are more in the series. This narrator was the best so far. Characters were clear and enjoyable to listen to. This writer has become my favourite author. He doesn’t waffle on and his knowledge of psychology makes his books interesting on so many levels.

Good gutsy story

I love Joes character, especially as he grapples with Parkinson’s disease. Narrator has an excellent array of voices and I had to slow it down to .9 to hear the accents. The plot was a clever build from a domestic situation to a national crime ring., with quirky police and ex police characters. Definitely a good book and part of a series that I will continue reading.

Well written story professionally narrated

While I did guess the ending before we got there, this was an engaging story that provided some very interesting insights into self-mutilation, grooming, Parkinson's disease and domestic violence. The main character is flawed but likeable. Robotham has obviously thoroughly researched the issues raised in the book and has woven them seamlessly into the plot. As well as being entertained I learned quite a bit. The narrator switched effortlessly between characters which always makes a huge difference to the experience of listening to a book. Highly recommended.

How much can a main character bear?

Poor Joseph O’Loughlin - his life has gone from perfect, to bad, to truly terrible in the space of a few books. How much grief and misery can one main character bear before the book he carries crumples under the weight of his extraordinary misfortune? In Bleed for Me the series took a plunge into the frustrating. So much evil and ill fortune inflicted on one character grinds the reader down as well as the unlucky main character. And there is no excuse for the fate of Gunsmoke - his terrible end didn’t take the plot anywhere and was never explained. It was an unnecessary and unnecessarily dreadful passage that was to no end whatsoever. Gratuitous viciousness shouldn’t be indulged in by the author. Surely it shouldn’t be about shock value alone.

I’m not a huge fan of the professor, and I’m not overly fond of his wife / ex-wife or eldest daughter. The misery of this book would have stopped me reading altogether but for Vincent Ruiz. His character keeps me going. Thankfully the next book focuses on ex-DCI Ruiz. And Sean Barrett is flawless, as ever.
