Publisher's Summary
Sometimes, blackmail is the only weapon a girl has....
Haley Patterson has had a crush on golden boy Bryce Colton for ages. But when she hears a rumor that he hooked up with her, she gives him a choice: be her boyfriend for a month to show other guys that she’s dateable - despite her overprotective and very intimidating brothers - or deal with the angry, cage-fighting boyfriend of the girl with whom he actually did hook up.
Bryce didn’t know the other Haley even had a boyfriend. He was just trying to get his ex off his back. And now, not only is he being blackmailed, he’s being blackmailed by an honor student. His new “girlfriend” has two three-legged dogs, her father mows grass at the country club, and she’s...well, difficult. And different.
Can something so fake turn into something real?

the temper tantrums was a bit much but they are high school kids so it will pass.

The male narrator sounds like a grandpa.
The story is ok, I wasn’t too into the characters though. They seemed to lack grit. I really found the male narration terrible, it sounded like my grandpa was reading a teenage romance novel to me 🤮.

Supporting couple = better than the actual couple
The one big thing nagging me about this book is that - it is teaching young girls and boys that it is okay to throw tantrums and threaten/use physical violence, in order to get your way or in reaction to something that displeases you.
Kicking a guy, punching him in the arm, poking him in the ribs, threatening him with violence from your brothers - that is not okay. If you think that is okay, try reversing the roles, so it is the male kicking the female in the shin... Do you see now?
I was going to give this 3 stars, but the casualness of physical violence throughout the entire book, is still bothering me enough upon finishing, that I have to drop it down to 2.
"I could ask my brother to punch him". "I thought about hitting him over the head with my lunch tray". "I accidentally on purpose kicked Bryce in the shin". "Plotting how I could accidentally hit Trent with a tennis racket". "Can I punch him now?"
Moving on..
The male narrator perhaps wasn't the best fit for Bryce. The voice for Haley was fine but I'm thinking her character may have been more palatable on paper..
*It's a little strange that Haley lays all the blame on Bryce and never even confronts the other Haley, who is the reason for the rumour in the first place..
At first I didn't understand the reviews mentioning Haley being an unlikable character.. It becomes clear pretty quickly. Not sure the best way to describe her.. She's a hctib? She's also desperate and clingy. Don't know how Bryce can stand her bratty tantrums when they're not even dating. She's also actually an awful person who thinks it's funny when her brothers call her iwishhiswasmyrealboyfriend a "mutt". Nice girl!..
Haley - "Am I being too needy?"
Also,
- Body shaming larger breasted women.
- Classist.
- Forgets far too early that Bryce isn't actually her boyfriend.
- Can't even pretend to be happy for her best friend who just got kissed.
The one time she really won me over was when she spoke out against sexism at the school. It was pretty epic.
Other things:
*Way too much changing of clothes.. Soda, mud, cheese, hickies.. It was bizarre and drove me actually insane.
*Also bizarre, the school doesn't allow public displays of affection but.. Females are allowed to wear tops cut so low that the male character can refer to them as "almost popping out".
*Last thing - no attractive tall blonde has been blessed with even half a brain.
What I liked:
*the animal shelter
*putt putt
*dogs 🐶
*baby talking to dogs
*cupcakes
*Jane + Nathan
*"I think he likes me because I'm funny, I'm smart and I save dogs."
*the country club
Aside from my moral issues with this book, overall it was quick and readable, but a bit shallow and I wanted to like it more than I did. Unfortunately, I didn't fall in love with any of the characters. I don't ship them.

Nothing clever or new here
It's exactly what it says it is and absolutely nothing else. I really wanted to like this but unfortunately I just couldn't.
