Publisher's Summary
London.
Detective Sergeant James Henderson's remarkable gut instincts have put him on a three-year fast track to becoming an inspector. But the advancement of his career has come at a cost. Gay, posh and eager to prove himself in the Metropolitan Police, James has allowed himself few chances for romance.
But when the murder of barrister Maria Curzon-Whyte lands in his lap, all that changes. His investigation leads him to a circle of irresistibly charming men. And though he knows better, James finds himself enticed into their company.
Soon his desire for photographer Ben Morgan challenges him to find a way into the other man's lifestyle of one-night stands and carefree promiscuity. At the same time his single murder case multiplies into a cruel pattern of violence and depravity.
But as the bodies pile up and shocking secrets come to light, James finds both his tumultuous private life and coveted career threatened by a bitter legacy.

Excellent story but beware the slog in the middle
The book started strong and engaging with intrigue and interesting characters. There the middle third though felt really hard to get through. It felt all over the place and found some of the character developments to be really challenging to persist through. I almost stopped listening. Very glad I didn’t - the final third picks up the tempo and story development and is 100% worth it. It makes the whole book.
Couldn’t understand how people said they were going to listen to it twice but I actually agree.
Performance was very good but with only downside that many of the main characters’ voices are very similar and it’s difficult to know who is speaking without really concentrating. Some less nuanced accents or modulations would be helpful. But still emotionally evocative and enjoyable.

An amazingly good police-procedural / mm romance!
Finally, a proper crime novel that also happens to have a gay romance! An out gay policeman, DS James Henderson is on the London Met’s Murder Investigation Team. He’s known for his keen intelligence and intuitive leaps. A murder case brings him into contact with Ben, who is looking for a flatmate, and the two become friends and more. Told from James’ POV, he is increasingly frustrated as the murders mount and he and Ben struggle to agree on what their relationship should be. I loved the well-crafted characters, the absorbing drama, the solid police-procedural, and the excellent writing. Some romance readers will not enjoy Ben’s promiscuity but it was an integral part of the story and not uncommon for a guy his age. Dal Maclean is impressive author and I hope she continues to add to this series! Audio narrator Gary Furlong is always excellent and the perfect choice for this series.

Remarkable story telling
At first I didn’t think this was going to be my thing, but how shocked and pleasantly surprised I was! Danger, intrigue, conspiracy all on top of the toxic masculinity and despair of life and love gone so wrong!
Amazing and hoping book 2 is just as captivating

It's just as good the 2nd time round
I have both the ebook and the audio of Bitter Legacy and, as book 2 is coming next year, I decided to relisten to the story. I enjoyed it just as much as I did the first time I read and then listened. I liked the characters and the story kept me listening. I was sorry when I had to get out of the car.
Highly recommended.

Excellent plot and rocky romance
Some books should come with a warning “30% tedious setup; 70% utterly gripping.” I stopped but later restarted and am glad I did. This is very much a murder thriller, with an MM romance intricately tied in. And it’s not a traditional romance in the slightest - it’s gritty and disturbing. Such a refreshing change for an MM romance to be primarily about a truly excellent plot and a totally unconventional relationship. Fantastic narration as well.
