About this listen

At only 32, Bishop Stockley has lived a hard-knock life. After doing five years in a federal prison, Bishop is back at his dad's trailer and working for his landscaping company, thrust into a legit world where he's no longer the alpha - a world where a criminal record is the least of his disadvantages, because Bishop can't read or write.

Bishop already had the deck stacked against him, but he wasn't afraid of hard work to change his situation, and he did want to change. Especially after he encountered Edison Scala, a kind-spirited office manager who didn't hesitate to come to his defense...a man that saw past Bishop's grass-stained coveralls. A man who wasn't intimidated by his stern features and his silence.

Bishop knew Edison was off-limits. He'd made personal vows to himself when he was released from prison, ones that he never intended to break. But, when Edison asked him about providing landscaping services at his home, there was no way he could refuse. He hadn't expected Edison to feed him, praise him, encourage him, and look at him the way he did - as if Bishop was somebody.

Contains mature themes.

Great story

The story is great. The narration was very average and almost had me not completing the book.

Great Story

I’m so glad I decided to check out some of the included audio books that came with my Audible subscription. This one was a beauty. It had a great storyline and was very well read. The characters were well developed and interesting. It also contained several interesting arcs. Firstly there was the one about Bishop and Trent being newly released from prison and going straight instead of back to their old gang. That required some adjustments. Then there was the one of could an ex prisoner be worthy of love. The one that held my attention best was that of adult illiteracy and how it affected Bishop and how he perceived himself. I certainly hope this is the start of a series and that there are more stories to be read or listened to. I’d like to know what happened to Trent and also to Bishops father. It was certainly worth listening to. I’m going to look for more by this author.

amazing

as with the Nothing Special series the characters in this book are deep and multifaceted. Bishop who believes himself stupid but is not and Edison bright as a star. both lonely, in many ways the polar opposite of each other in upbringing, but their connection is true and perhaps their worst enemies are not the ex or colleagues but their own insecurities. loved it can't wait to read the next in the series.

Really enjoyable.

Really liked the story and made me laugh on many occasions. Skylar was an interesting character and Bishop just made me melt he is such a big teddybear. Narration was really good except sometimes the female voices sounded the drag queens. Whilst the men just sounded hot. Thanks Great read.

Slow burn, overblown virginity story.

Nice to hear a MC that’s not a massive Adonis, but it was a bit too mushy and painfully romantic in parts for me. I prefer the higher octane Via series like Nothing Special or Prophesy.

Ok but heavy-handed characterisations!

Landscaper Bishop Stockley is trying to turn his life around after serving five years in prison for armed robbery but his biggest fear is that people will ridicule his illiteracy. Edison Scala is an extremely dedicated paralegal office manager in one of the top law firms in Virginia but he finds it hard to stand up to Skylar, one of his bullying subordinates. The two men meet when Bishop’s company landscapes the grounds of the building Edison works in and their mutual feelings give both men the strength to overcome their fears.

I find AE Via’s writing polarising—I like the risks she takes but it’s usually hit or miss for me, and this was more of a miss. I think she paints Bishop’s illiteracy and Edison’s timidity too heavy handedly, they both felt like caricatures. If he can’t read a menu, how on earth did Bishop get a drivers license and why didn’t he learn to read in prison? How did Edison get to such a senior management position in a cutthroat industry without effectively dealing with pushy or rude people? I know the slow burn was meant to be romantic but Bishop’s views on Edison’s virginity seemed archaic and the romance dragged rather than sizzled. Tor Thom isn’t a favourite narrator, he feels ponderous or breathless at times—it helped to skip bits and speed up the audio which is currently free on the Audible Plus catalogue.
