About this listen

The world’s greatest thriller writers prove they’re up to a unique challenge in this action-packed, audio-original collection.

It all started with a simple, yet sneakily difficult challenge from global best-selling author Harlan Coben: Pick a bird of prey, then use it as the inspiration for a brand-new story.

The response from some of the best writers on the planet: Game on!

The result: Eleven stories that are twisty, scary, surprising and bursting with imagination. An egg worth more than its weight in gold. A mysterious operative known only as Owl. An eagle-watcher who sees more than she should. Even a story that somehow places the Maltese Falcon in a nursing home.

Birds of Prey: The Harlan Coben Challenge is a highly bingeable audiobook that’s a treat for thriller fans.

Introduced by Harlan Coben, Birds of Prey features these stories:

  • “The Coffin Bearer” by Tess Gerritsen
  • “Precious Cargo” by C.J. Box
  • “Owl” by Kathy Reichs
  • “Kudzu” by Ace Atkins
  • “Predator or Prey?” by Heather Graham
  • “Silent as a Shadow” by S.A. Cosby
  • “Jail Birds” by Hank Phillippi Ryan
  • “The Falcon” by Robert Dugoni
  • “Watchers” by Allison Brennan
  • “Red of Beak and Claw” by Gregg Hurwitz
  • “Hawkshaw Hunting” by Kelley Armstrong

Birds of Prey: The Harlan Coben Challenge was created with International Thriller Writers (ITW). C.J. Box served as project editor.

Short suspense stories by some of the best!

Thriller writer Harlan Coben sets some of the world’s most popular writers of murder/mysteries and action/thrillers the task of producing a short story related to a bird of prey. Some stories involve real birds, others symbolic, some involve murder, all have an air of menace . I loved the concept and most of the stories …

"The Coffin Bearer" by Tess Gerritsen: On a lonely island, a woman with a dangerous past uncovers a murder when she is drawn to a flock of seagulls.

"Precious Cargo" by C.J. Box: Everything goes horribly wrong when the wilderness guide fails to return for a ruthless peregrine falcon egg thief.

"Owl" by Kathy Reichs: After autopsying an unworldly desiccated body, Dr Olly ‘Owl’ Logan becomes embroiled in a dangerous investigation in Roswell, NM.

"Kudzu" by Ace Atkins: Black buzzards circle a long-abandoned house covered in kudzu. Why won’t the owner allow the house to be torn down?

"Predator or Prey?" by Heather Graham: A woman who saves a California condor begins to suspect that her gorgeous husband is responsible for the recent fatal attacks on women in the area.

"Silent as a Shadow" by S.A. Cosby: The hoot of an owl is a portent of doom. A pharmacist is having an affair with the drug addict he supplies. It all goes wrong when he is blackmailed into supplying ingredients for drug manufacturing to her boyfriend.

"Jail Birds" by Hank Phillippi Ryan: Two staff members are tempted to steal from a senile patient in an aged care facility who obsessively watches the film, The Maltese Falcon, over and over again.

"The Falcon" by Robert Dugoni: A college student convinces two buddies to pitch in to buy a classic 1965 Ford Falcon at auction, but soon the original owner of the car threatens violence if he doesn’t get the car back.

"Watchers" by Allison Brennan: A wildlife photographer and her brother are monitoring a remote bald eagle’s nest in Arizona when they witness a murder which puts them in danger.

"Red of Beak and Claw" by Gregg Hurwitz: Vampire finches may look innocuous, but once we’ve invited them into our lives, they’ll take over and suck us dry.

"Hawkshaw Hunting" by Kelley Armstrong: two police officers come across a territorial northern goshawk while tracking a dangerous felon through the wilderness.
