About this listen
Big Lies in a Small Town, by the internationally best-selling author Diane Chamberlain, is a sweeping novel about two women connected by a painting that holds many dark secrets.
North Carolina, 2018: Morgan Christopher’s life has been derailed. Taking the fall for a crime she did not commit, she finds herself serving a three year stint in the North Carolina Women’s Correctional Centre. Her dream of a career in the arts is put on hold – until a mysterious visitor makes her an offer that will see her released immediately. Her assignment: restore an old post office mural in a sleepy southern town. Morgan knows nothing about art restoration but, desperate to leave prison, she accepts. What she finds under the layers of grime is a painting that tells the story of madness, violence and a conspiracy of small-town secrets.
North Carolina, 1940: Anna Dale, an artist from New Jersey, wins a national contest to paint a mural for the post office in Edenton, North Carolina. Alone in the world and desperate for work, she accepts. But what she doesn’t expect is to find herself immersed in a town where prejudices run deep, where people are hiding secrets behind closed doors and where the price for being different might just end in murder.
What happened to Anna Dale? Are the clues hidden in the decrepit mural? Can Morgan overcome her own demons to discover what exists beneath the layers of lies?

"Fans of Jodi Picoult’s style will love how Diane Chamberlain writes." (Candis)
"Narrator Susan Bennett offers a moving performance of this multilayered story of two women whose lives are affected by a New Deal art mural. Portraying Morgan, Bennett's voice has a tone of artistic sensitivity. When Anna's life spirals out of control, she adds feverish intensity. For the locals, Bennett superbly delivers a languid Southern drawl. Overall, Bennett adds an exciting dimension to a gripping story of racism, madness, murder, and even romance." (J.E.S, AudioFile)

Great story
A clever story of art revealing details of a crime in time past. I would have enjoyed more detail of the types of paints and their color. There were sentences where the narrator noticed too late, and attempted to correct with one or two words, which was a question, or words spoken softer or louder. These areas need to be marked in advance.

Best book of 2023
Wow! This book had me gripped day after day! It made the commute to work so enjoyable! I loved every minute. Little bit of romance, bit of scandal, lots of intrigue! I don’t even like art but boy was I invested in this one!
