About this listen

From the hosts of hit podcast Call Your Girlfriend comes the bible on how to keep each other close.

A New York Times bestseller

Close friendships are the key to happiness - but we don't talk enough about what it takes to nurture them for the long haul.

Telling the story of their own ten-year, complex, loving friendship, Aminatou and Ann share hard-won wisdom with honesty, hilarity and compassion. They've weathered life-threatening health scares, long-distance living, and one unfortunate Thanksgiving dinner eaten in a parking lot. And they know: the most important part of a Big Friendship is investing in each other again and again.

This is a testament to the power of society's most underappreciated relationship and a compelling story of how it can survive, thrive and become a life-affirming bond.

surprisingly good

I was surprised because I didn't think a story about two young women's friendships could apply to me, an older gent. however, it was a nice read and I took a few notes. while this is not a how to on making friends as an adult, it is nice to see that this neglected area of relationships is getting some awareness shined on it. I found the prose to be a little too #hip for a square like me but it could be argued that this gave the performance some texture.

This is the book everybody would want. It’s the big friendship guide everybody deserves. I don't know a better friendship story.

I am often skeptical of overly positive reviews but this book exceeded my every expectation. I laughed at friendship mishaps, reflected on what I had labelled ‘toxic’ friendships that I had let slip away, and cried over the aptly termed ‘dormant’ relationships in my life that are yet to heal. Once I purchased it I was unable to stop listening (stopping only to sleep briefly), and when I was done felt a renewed energy to reach out to the big friendships in my own life. It was the book I needed in these isolated and lonely times, stuck in a mandatory lockdown with my big friendships more than 1500km away. It was comforting in its unflinching honesty, but also didn’t shy away from discussing race and its importance in friendship dynamics which has prompted me to confront how much more work I need to do. I am a big fan of the podcast, but was even more inspired by this book. It smashes the unrealistic expectations I had been lead to believe about friendship (from observing public friendships via curated media) and reaffirmed experiences I had had but was unable to articulate. It makes me feel like I have a new perspective to approach some of these hard conversations. I feel so privileged to have found this book at this time of so much upheaval as it has given me the vocabulary to talk about friendship in a meaningful way.

I wish I'd read this years ago

A singularly brilliant book on the love of Big friendships, how we need our friends and the ways in which we can destroy them. I loved this book so much and have lost a big friendship a few years ago, I now know why it failed and I wish I had fought harder for it. Mallory, I'm sorry I didn't fight for us.
