Publisher's Summary

Peter Garrett's life so far has been deeply felt and fully and passionately lived. A man of boundless energy, compassion, fierce intelligence and a questing and creative spirit, he has already achieved enough to fill several lives.

From his idyllic childhood growing up in the northern suburbs of Sydney to the devastating early loss of his parents; from the height of 1960s culture shock at ANU to fronting iconic Australian band Midnight Oil; from his time as a galvanising activist for the environment to being the only unaligned Cabinet Minister in two Labor governments, Garrett has an extraordinary story to tell.

He talks movingly about his lifelong mission to protect the environment and champion indigenous communities and issues, about his love for his family and his passion for our country: what it means to him and what it can become.

Provocative, entertaining, impassioned and inspiring, this memoir goes to the heart and soul of a remarkable Australian and raises questions crucial to us all.

The story of an icon, AUSTRALIA

I do not always agree with Peter‘s politics. I did find interesting his descriptions of the various politicians and his dealings with them. It was a great insight to the sort of people they are.

Peter Garrett is a man of depth and colour.

A meaningful account of a wonderful life. Fantastic opportunity to candidly hear your hero from the adolescent years talk about his upbringing, the band, the activism and the politics. Very important in depth and detailed account of what happened behind the door of the Labor party. For the naysayers a chance to hear Peter's version of what was seen as a sell out! Thanks again Peter. I have always valued your contribution through music, action, and values.

The Pragmatic Approach to Change.

Peter takes us on a journey of learning life's ropes and then following through on one's convictions in this to make our country a better place for us ALL.

I highly recommend this book for many reasons all of which you will understand as you progress through it.

Peter is one of our better Australians.

Rocker, politician, humanitarian

I listened to this on audible with my husband (who is a huge Midnight Oil fan) while we travelled around Queensland. The fact that it’s read by Peter Garret adds so much to the story. You can hear his enthusiasm, his fond reminiscence and, at times, his sadness (particularly when speaking about his parents deaths).

We especially enjoyed his earlier years when he talks about his youth and his wonderful stories about the band. Although we aren’t big on politics, there were enough interesting and amusing anecdotes to keep us entertained. It makes you understand just how hard it would be to be a politician- you can never please all the people all the time and you can’t just do what you want. There’s a lot of negotiations and hoop jumping and probably a lot of compromising to get just some things through. Well worth the read/listen.

Great story....

Really enjoyed this...was fascinating to hear what was going on behind the scenes, while Midnight Oil was touring. Midnight Oil shaped my teenage years. Peter Garrett should be proud of what he has achieved..inspirational.

Peter Garrett - a remarkable Australian

I enjoyed learning about Peter the activist, the environmentalist, the artist and the politician - and of course, the family man. What an amazing and full life he has had.

I think his contributions to the arts, the environment & supporting Australians and First Nation peoples are admirable.

Gets dull once he joins government...

This would probably have been better as a two part memoir. Lots of fascinating activist and musical tuff pre joining Parliament and then lots of political nitty gritty afterwards. So two very separate interest groups.
