Ester is a family therapist with an appointment book that catalogues the anxieties of the middle class: loneliness, relationships, death. She spends her days helping others find happiness, but her own family relationships are tense and frayed. Ester is yearning to fall in love again. Meanwhile, her ex-husband's past decisions are catching up with him, her sister is struggling through her own directionless life and her mother is about to make a choice that will profoundly affect them all.

A gentle yet powerful story
It slowly drew me in and by the end I was hooked and wanted more. The narrator brought the characters to life and was pleasant to listen to.

Family Life & Gutsy Characters
Blain creates characters that you feel you know by the time you get half-way through the book and by the end you love them (and hate them). My fave was Hilary: what a woman! She is a mother who feels with all the emotion of a mother and loves her girls more than life itself - and that is why the book ends as it does. NO Spoilers here - read it and love it.

rich and thought provoking
This story is filled with the frailties and richness of the people within its covers … a deep dive and so very real.

Struggled to get through it
It has its moments, mostly aesthetic descriptions and the melancholy, but I struggled to stay with it. Didn't really care about the characters and certainly couldn't relate to them. Well written, but not my thing.

Not my style
I struggled to stay with it. I wasn't sure of the point and found it to be over-descriptive. I feel like it is well written but not right for me, rather than it just being a poor quality book.

Mundane
Relatively well written novel but the plot is predictable and the characters boring. Yawn. Next
